Not as crazy as it sounds when you really think about it.
This next window holds not a lot of heavy significant bearing - Australia, New Zealand and Gilas are all moving on to the next round regardless of the outcomes.
UNDERSTANDABLY EVERY GAME MATTERS in terms of placement and possible opponents.
But for Gilas, this is a time as critical as any to figure out a few critical pieces.
It matters so little how we play the standings if we’re gonna end up losing anyway because of our inability to address major problems with our line up.
Most notably, the size problem.
No Kai Sotto, No QMB and AJ Edu is the only international veteran big.
Mike Phillips is new to the roster and brings energy and athleticism - he's 6'8 but doesn't have the needed size to take punishment downlow against the Tall Blacks and Aussies.
Justin Baltazar is 6'8 and brings floor spacing and physicality - but lacks the natural size and strength at the position in the international space.
And he can play with "heart" all he wants, but when the opponent is the same size as you and can move faster than you do, heart wont matter - and we're done with the "learning experiences" and "consolation prizes" we keep giving ourselves.
This proposal? Now doesn't seem so crazy:
✅Put Brownlee on ice - this is a throw away window and Brownlee is 38 years old and running up mileage faster than a Toyota Revo in the early 2000's - he could use the break and honestly, with how many years are left in the tank, transitioning out this early from Brownlee isn't a crazy concept to digest.
✅Replace June Mar Fajardo with Ange Kouame. June Mar's ineffective in the international space. We've known that about June Mar for the longest time. That, and he's racking up the years as well - same as Justin Brownlee. Getting reps against international competition using Kouame and our new generation talent would be a terrific use of this tournament.
✅Add in one more playmaker to take the offensive pressure off of those who are required to already contribute on the perimeter. That plus one? Robert Bolick.
The rotation looks competitive enough when this adjustment is in place:
PG: Abbarientos/JGDL
SG: Dwight Ramos/Chris Newsome/Robert Bolick
SF: Kevin Quiambao/Carl Tamayo/Troy Rosario
PF: Mike Phillips/Justine Baltazar
C: Ange Kouame/AJ Edu
Multiple combinations can be achieved with that new line up and by all accounts, if we're thinking about the future of this team, it wouldn't hurt to start REALLY developing our talent.
And it wouldn't hurt at all to start NOW.
