EMEREGNCY MEDICAL SERVICES [EMS]- An ESSENTIAL component of healthcare and public safety. It is unfortunate for a country that is littered with ambulances that EMS is non existent and if an ambulance that is equipped does exist, they are present only in private companies that provide ambulance service. EMS is a component of the healthcare spectrum that provides life-saving medical care to the sick and the injured on scene and en route to a medical facility. Prehospital care is provided by Emergency Medical Technicians [EMT] trained to a specific skill level [basic, advanced and paramedic]. EMS operates in a system that allows it to function safely, effectively and efficiently if these are present: public safety answering point-emergency notification and dispatching, integration to hospital hospital healthcare system and emergency medicine, training and continuing education to name a few. Life threatening emergencies from various causes [motor vehicle collision, occupation and recreational injuries] or medical conditions require a systematic and integrated response. In a motor vehicle collision for example that involves multiple patients and a fire; the PNP and the BFP are present to respond. However, medical care is absent; and if ambulances are present, there is no trained personnel nor available life-saving equipment. EMS is an overlooked, unappreciated and unrecognized component of healthcare and public safety until life threatening injury or medical condition exists; and if it does exist, no agency or organization is institutionalized to provide quality patient care.
