Cagayan de Oro BMX riders are calling for a dedicated public skatepark, saying the lack of proper facilities is pushing young athletes to train in streets, vacant lots, and other makeshift spaces.
Local rider Ray Allen Macabodbod said practicing BMX on roads exposes athletes to traffic, pedestrians, and uneven surfaces while also making it difficult to secure suitable practice areas.
Riders believe a safe public facility could help develop local BMX talent, especially with action sports included in the upcoming Batang Pinoy 2026 Games.
The city is considering a permanent skatepark inside the proposed Zayas Eco Park, but the project remains under feasibility studies with no fixed completion timeline.
