⚽ 🤯 The World Cup group stage just got a MASSIVE makeover, and things are getting wild!

If you’ve been watching the games and wondering how the standings work now, you aren’t alone. The tournament has officially expanded from 32 to 48 teams, and the blueprint for making it to the finals has completely changed! 🏆

Want to know how it actually works? Here is the quick, layman’s terms breakdown of the new rules vs. the old ones:

🔄 Out with the Old, In with the New:

The Team Count: We went from 32 countries to 48 teams on the world stage! (A massive 50% increase!) 🌍

The Group Setup: Instead of the usual 8 groups, there are now 12 groups of 4 teams. 📊

The Safety Net: In the old days, only the top 2 teams survived the group stage. Now, the top 2 from each group PLUS the 8 best 3rd-place teams advance. 🎟️

The Knockout Bracket: Because more teams survive the group phase, a brand-new "Round of 32" knockout stage has been added before we even get to the Round of 16. ⚔️

Non-Stop Football: The total number of matches jumped from 64 to a massive 104 games! 📺

🤔 Is this new system better?

The Good: It’s a massive global football festival. More underdogs get a shot at glory, big powerhouse nations are safer from a single early fluke elimination, and hope stays alive for almost every country right until the final group match.

The Bad: The intense, life-or-death drama of the old group stage feels a bit watered down since 66% of the teams move on anyway. Plus, we all have to do a bit of math and look at a wildcard leaderboard just to see who makes it through!
