Danny León had just one minute to get it right.

The Spanish Olympic skater, born in Móstoles and known as “The Alchemist of Skateboarding,” had spent months planning this moment alongside photographer José Ángel Izquierdo. On August 12, 2026, Spain was the setting for Europe’s first total solar eclipse in 27 years, and León didn’t just want to see it: he wanted to jump at the exact moment the sky went completely dark.

The team arrived a day early to set up the halfpipe and run tests. They filmed from 400 and 600 meters away using a telephoto lens, so the silhouette of the jump would be perfectly outlined against the solar disc. In Madrid, the obscuration reached 99.95%, and within that tiny two- or three-minute window, León performed the trick while Izquierdo snapped the photo.

The image completes a trilogy they began a year earlier: first the Sun, then the Moon, and now the eclipse. Three shots, the same risk calculated down to the second.

Spanish Olympic skateboarder Danny León really did perform a skate trick timed with a total solar eclipse, creating one of the most striking sports photographs of recent years. The viral image was captured in Novales, Huesca, Spain, during the August 12, 2026 total solar eclipse, and it was the result of months of planning, not a lucky snapshot.

León worked with photographer José Ángel Izquierdo (JaiCano) and producer Gonzalo González de Vega, who studied the eclipse path and built a special ramp so his jump would align perfectly with the eclipsed Sun. The stunt was incredibly difficult because totality lasted only about 30 seconds.

León had just a tiny window to launch from the ramp, reach the correct height, and place his silhouette directly in front of the Sun. He later described it as “the trick of my life,” and the team reportedly had only a few attempts during totality before the eclipse ended.

After León posted the video on Instagram, the image spread rapidly across social media and was shared worldwide by sports and photography accounts.
