Mga Katanim,

Throwback to a time when I was still part of a different nutrient solution journey..

Be thankful. Keep moving forward. And always be a blessing to others.

CHERRY TOMATO UPDATE — DAY 9 OF CONSECUTIVE RAIN

This is already our 9th straight day of rain, yet our cherry tomatoes in the rooftop greenhouse are still actively growing. 🌱

Rainy weather brings several challenges for tomato production:

- lower light intensity
- high humidity
- slower transpiration
- higher risk of fungal pressure
- more vegetative growth if not managed properly

That is why tomato growing is not just about feeding the plants. It is about managing the whole system.

With the Katanim Protocol for Cherry Tomato, we focus on these key principles:

✅ Balanced root feeding with KISS PLUS
We maintain proper nutrition to support steady growth even during cloudy and wet conditions.

✅ Strong root development
Using Bio-Initiate helps the plant build an active and healthy root system early.

✅ Root-zone protection
During rainy days, the risk of stress and disease becomes higher, so Bio-Defense helps protect the root zone and support seedling and plant stability.

✅ Proper pruning and sucker management
Tomatoes naturally produce side shoots or suckers in the leaf axils. These should be managed properly to improve airflow, reduce excess canopy, and direct the plant’s energy toward productive growth.

✅ Protected cultivation
A good greenhouse setup helps reduce direct weather stress and gives the grower better control over the environment.

Our lesson here is simple:

When the weather becomes difficult, plant health depends on preparation.
Strong roots, proper nutrition, protection, and pruning all work together.

Even on the 9th consecutive day of rain, our cherry tomatoes continue to move forward under the Katanim Protocol.

Build the roots. Manage the canopy. Protect the crop.

That is the Katanim way.

CHERRY TOMATO UPDATE — ROOFTOP FARMING WITH THE KATANIM PROTOCOL

Nine consecutive days of rain, cloudy skies, high humidity—and our cherry tomatoes on the rooftop are still pushing new growth. 🌱

One thing growers should watch closely is the small shoot growing between the main stem and the leaf petiole. This is called a sucker, axillary shoot, or side shoot.

For vertically trained cherry tomatoes, we regularly remove unnecessary suckers to help:

✅ Improve airflow around the plant
✅ Reduce excessive vegetative growth
✅ Direct more energy toward flowers and fruits
✅ Make the canopy easier to manage
✅ Reduce moisture buildup during rainy weather

But pruning alone is not enough.

During long periods of rain, tomatoes receive less sunlight and transpiration can decrease. This is why we focus heavily on maintaining a healthy root zone and balanced nutrition through the Katanim Protocol.

💧 KISS PLUS — balanced root feeding based on the required EC and pH
🌱 Bio-Initiate — supports early and continuous root development
🛡️ Bio-Defense — biological root-zone support, especially important during wet and humid conditions
✂️ Proper Pruning — keeps the tomato canopy manageable and well ventilated

Our principle is simple:

Don’t wait for the plant to become weak before taking action. Build strong roots, maintain proper nutrition, manage the canopy, and protect the plant from the beginning.

Even with 9 straight days of rain, we continue managing our cherry tomatoes toward a healthy, productive harvest.

Strong roots. Balanced nutrition. Proper management.

That is the Katanim Protocol.

KNOW YOUR KATANIM PROTOCOL: PREVENT • PROTECT • RESCUE

One common mistake in growing is waiting until the plants are already heavily attacked before taking action.

At Katanim, our approach is different:

BUILD PROTECTION WHILE THE PLANTS ARE STILL YOUNG.

🪰 BIO-FLORAL — PROACTIVE INSECT CONTROL

Bio-Floral is our regular bio-control for common greenhouse pests such as:

• Whiteflies
• Thrips
• Aphids
• Leaf miners
• Small caterpillars

We use Bio-Floral as weekly maintenance, especially for our leafy vegetables.

The goal is not to wait for a serious infestation. We use it proactively to help keep pest populations under control before they become a major problem.

🥊 BIO-KNOCKOUT — RESCUE DURING INFESTATION

Bio-Knockout is different.

This is NOT our regular maintenance spray.

Bio-Knockout is our rescue formula when pest pressure becomes difficult to control or when the greenhouse is already experiencing a significant infestation.

It is especially useful against stubborn pest populations, including caterpillars.

Our rescue protocol is generally:

3 consecutive night applications

The objective is to progressively knock down the pest population until the greenhouse becomes manageable again.

🌧️ BUT WHAT ABOUT BLACK SPOT AND FUNGAL PROBLEMS?

Bio-Floral and Bio-Knockout are primarily intended for INSECT CONTROL.

Fungal diseases are a different problem.

During rainy and highly humid conditions, fungal pressure can increase because fungal spores can spread and infect vulnerable plants.

That is where our defensive approach begins with:

🛡️ BIO-DEFENSE

Instead of waiting for root rot, damping-off, or fungal infection to appear, we start protecting the crop before sowing.

For cocopeat preparation:

👉 1 scoop Bio-Defense / 10 L water

Use the solution to wet the prepared cocopeat before sowing.
The cocopeat only needs to be properly moistened — it does not need to be soaked.

Then on around Day 4 after sowing, when we begin bottom drenching our seedlings, we use:

🌱 KISS PLUS
🛡️ Bio-Defense
💪 Bio-Initiate

For reservoir or Kratky use:

👉 Bio-Defense: 1 scoop / 20 L water

This allows beneficial Bacillus to begin establishing around the root zone early, helping support the plant's natural defense against root and fungal problems.

🌱 BIO-INITIATE — START WITH THE ROOTS

The performance of the plant starts with the roots.

Bio-Initiate is our peptide-based root-support formula used in the reservoir together with KISS PLUS and Bio-Defense.

👉 Bio-Initiate: 1 ml / 1 L water

Its role is to support faster and stronger root initiation during the critical seedling stage.

Healthy roots mean a stronger foundation for the entire crop.

✅ DON'T WAIT FOR THE PROBLEM. BUILD THE PLANT FIRST.

Protect while they are young.
Develop the roots early.
Manage insects proactively.
Build biological protection before fungal pressure becomes serious.

This is why we follow the KATANIM PROTOCOL.

Even during the rainy season, our goal is not simply to get one good harvest when conditions are favorable.

Our goal is:

🌱 REPEATABLE HARVEST
🌱 CONSISTENT QUALITY
🌱 ACHIEVABLE YIELD — SEASON AFTER SEASON

Watch our Katanim LIVE growing sessions and see how we apply the protocol in actual production.

Not just growing plants. We build them from the roots.

From Ayuda to Sustainable Livelihood

Today, we witnessed the blessing and official turnover of the new hydroponic greenhouse in Smokey Mountain—an inspiring initiative of JCI Manila, created not only to provide food, but also to build a more sustainable future for the community.

Walang masama sa pagbibigay ng instant noodles, canned goods, at iba pang relief assistance. These forms of help are important, especially during times of emergency. But after the food has been consumed, what comes next?

True transformation begins when we give people the knowledge, tools, systems, and opportunities to produce their own food and earn a dignified livelihood.

Through this greenhouse, the community will not simply receive vegetables—they will learn how to grow them. They will gain practical skills, access to healthier food, and an opportunity to create a continuous source of income.

To help ensure the long-term success of this project, the greenhouse will follow the Katanim Protocol, supported by Mega Packaging Corporation’s Big Box reservoir and NFT insulators for a more efficient and climate-resilient hydroponic growing system.

May this initiative encourage more socio-civic organizations, private institutions, and government leaders to go beyond temporary assistance. Let us continue giving ayuda when it is needed—but let us also build projects that provide education, livelihood, dignity, and hope.

This is more than a greenhouse. It is a place where food, knowledge, opportunities, and dreams can grow together.

Congratulations to JCI Manila and everyone who made this meaningful project possible. From relief to livelihood, let us create help that lasts.
