In the Bihar School of Yoga (BSY) tradition, we honor a vital distinction: breathwork is not yet pranayama—it is the preparation. Before we can direct vital energy (prana), we must first train, stretch, and awaken the physical breath. We always give our students time to build this foundation.
One of the essential ways we prepare is through 3-part breathing:
engaging the diaphragmatic (belly), thoracic (chest), and clavicular(collarbone) spaces.
Here, our students are practicing a 5:5:5 ratio:
- 5 seconds Inhale (filling bottom to top)
- 5 secondsGentle Retention / Hold
- 5 seconds Exhale
The Science:
Holding the breath briefly gives the alveoli - the tiny air sacs in our lungs—more time to expand and efficiently exchange oxygen into the bloodstream. It maximizes full lung capacity while soothing the nervous system.
Learn more about this breathing technique and improve your whole respiratory system. Join our class now!
