Versatility in the dojo is essential for student development. Jiyu Kumite, in the form of Jissen or Irikumi Kumite, should not be eliminated from any dojo. Practically speaking, this approach makes sense. Many Shotokan and other schools often prioritize preserving traditions over adaptability, leading to scenarios where karate practitioners are ill-prepared for real street confrontations.

Why does this happen? It's due to how karate is packaged and delivered in classrooms and training halls, affecting individual practitioners' interpretations. This can lead to a diluted form of karate, practiced merely for showmanship and social entertainment. While such practices aren't inherently wrong, achieving a balanced approach can enhance the learning and practice of karate. Whether it's taught as a sport, a form of Budo, or otherwise, it's crucial to protect students from illusory practices and understand what is effective within and beyond the dojo.

We live in diverse environments, and our karate training should reflect that reality. In safe neighborhoods or countries, sports karate or performance-focused karate might be suitable choices. Conversely, in challenging areas, practical karate is more appropriate. It's important to practice wisely.

Traditional karate styles and rituals like Kihon and Kata are integral to martial arts and hold significance within contemporary culture. We can respect these elements for their artistry but should train with purpose and teach with enlightenment, vision, and an understanding of current times and contexts.
