πThe 2026 LAE SCHOOLS RUGBY LEAGUE COMPETITION season has reached its most exciting stage, with the competition now entering the Major Semi-Finals after months of thrilling matches.
This year's competition featured nine primary schools and seven secondary schools, including several Junior High Schools, such as Taraka Junior High School. While some schools fielded two or three teams across different divisions, others competed with a single team.
The competition was played across six divisions:
Primary: Under-15 Boys, Under-17 Boys and Under-17 Girls.
Secondary: Under-17 Boys (including Junior High Schools), Under-19 Girls and Under-19 Boys.
Last weekend's semi-finals saw most divisions complete their matches, while the remaining Under-19 fixtures were played yesterday as washout games to determine the final qualifying teams.
The finals format has been highly competitive. The winners of the 1st vs 2nd semi-finals have earned direct qualification to the Grand Final.
Meanwhile, the winners of the 3rd vs 4th elimination matches will face the losers from the top-two semi-finals in tomorrow's Major Semi-Finals, with the losing teams from the elimination matches bowing out of the competition.
It has been another remarkable journey for Lae Schools Rugby League, showcasing the talent, passion and sportsmanship of young players throughout the season. Tomorrow's matches will decide the remaining Grand Finalists who will join the already-qualified teams in what promises to be an exciting championship showdown.

π΅π¬βοΈπ Rugby League is Papua New Guinea's national sport and a passion shared across the country. Many young people dream of wearing the PNG Kumuls jersey or one day playing in the NRL. While rugby league can change lives, education remains the foundation for long-term success.
Every year, thousands of talented players chase professional careers, but only a small number reach the elite level. Injuries, fierce competition, and limited opportunities mean many never make it. That's why education is so important, it provides opportunities that last long after the final whistle.
A good education opens doors to careers such as teaching, nursing, engineering, business, media, policing, and even roles within rugby league like coaching, sports science, refereeing, and club management.
Programs like the NRL's League Bilong Laif encourage young Papua New Guineans to stay in school while enjoying rugby league, proving that education and sport can go hand in hand.
Parents, teachers, and coaches all play a role in reminding young athletes that success isn't only measured on the scoreboard. The discipline learned in the classroom often helps create better players and stronger leaders.
As PNG prepares for the arrival of the PNG Chiefs in the NRL in 2028, the country has a chance to produce not only outstanding footballers but also an educated generation ready to lead the nation.
A rugby career may last a decade. An education can last a lifetime. The smartest path is to chase your rugby league dream while never leaving your education behind. βοΈβ¨οΈ γ

π₯π΄Brisbane Broncos Keep Finals Hopes Alive with Stunning Win Over Panthers.
The Brisbane Broncos have kept their slim NRL finals hopes alive after upsetting premiership favourites Penrith Panthers 14-12 on a wet Thursday night in Sydney.
Coming into the match on an eight-game losing streak, Brisbane produced a spirited performance led by superstar fullback Reece Walsh. Walsh set up tries for Jordan Riki, Kotoni Staggs and Josiah Karapani before calmly kicking the match-winning sideline conversion with 10 minutes remaining.
The Panthers pushed hard in the closing stages, but the Broncos' defence held firm to secure one of their biggest wins of the season.
The victory lifts Brisbane to a 6-11 record, leaving them six competition points outside the top eight. While their path to the finals remains difficult, the reigning premiers are still mathematically alive in the race for September football.
