Spread the love with Ankay!
Together, we monitor reef health and do coral restoration. All these efforts are so our reefs can thrive once more.

Our research has been recently published in a scientific journal!
“It has always been my aspiration to publish a scientific paper. With a Master’s degree in Organizational Psychology, I never anticipated that it would be in marine sciences,” -Paula Sills, Founder of Ankay Conservation.
The tireless efforts of Pau and Rosie Young have recently been acknowledged by Springer Nature in the journal Discover Oceans.
In this journal, we have presented data pertaining to the overall health of coral native to Bocas Del Toro, as well as that of the fish that inhabit these areas.
It is more crucial than ever to preserve this delicate ecosystem, and thanks to Springer, our research will reach a wider audience and raise awareness for ocean conservation.

Broadcast spawning is critical because it ensures the survival, genetic health, and geographic spread of marine ecosystems. Without this strategy, sedentary reef species like corals and clams would quickly go extinct.
Because thousands of organisms release billions of eggs and s***m into the water column simultaneously, the gametes mix randomly over vast areas. This creates incredibly high genetic diversity. High genetic variation makes marine populations resilient against diseases, pollution, and rising ocean temperatures caused by climate change.

Monitoring coral reefs is critical because it acts as an early warning system for ocean health, directly guiding conservation and protecting the livelihoods of over 500 million people. Because coral reefs are highly sensitive to environmental changes, tracking their condition allows scientists and governments to respond to threats before ecosystems collapse.

Tiny but mighty!
Phytoplankton are microscopic, plant-like organisms that drift in the sunlit upper layers of oceans, lakes, and rivers. Despite their tiny size, they are the foundation of the aquatic food web and produce 50% of the world’s oxygen, making them absolutely vital to life on Earth
