You get 8/10 on a test.

Which number does your brain focus on?

8 correct?
Or...
2 wrong?

This week in Master Your Mind we've been exploring maximising and minimising.

It's a thinking pattern where we can make one part of an experience seem much bigger than it really is while making another part seem much smaller.

And once you start noticing it, you see it everywhere.

Eight things go well and one goes badly.

"Today was awful."

Someone receives ten positive comments and one critical one.

Guess which one they remember?

So here's a question we've been practising:

"Am I looking at the whole picture or have I zoomed in on just one part of it?"

Psychology becomes incredibly useful when young people can take an idea out of the classroom and start recognising it in their own lives.

That's exactly what we're doing in our Master Your Mind: Thinking Traps course.

Can you think of ways in which you have maximising and minimising this week?

Friday IGCSE Psychology Tutorials

Recommended for students considering the Cambridge exams. Tutorials include reviewing independent coursework, clarifying key concepts, and practising Cambridge-style questions and exam techniques.

Students taking the IGCSE pathway will be allocated approximately 2–3 hours of independent classwork between weekly sessions.

All main teaching sessions are recorded and available through Google Classroom.

Each module stands alone, so students can take either one or complete both.

IGCSE Psychology: Motivation & Needs

Why do we do the things we do?

* Why will one person work hard for a prize while another is motivated simply because they enjoy learning?
* Why do some people keep exercising while others struggle to begin?
* And why is knowing that something is “good for us” often not enough to make us do it?

This 10-week online psychology course explores the Cambridge IGCSE Psychology topic Motivation & Needs and is divided into two 5-week stand-alone blocks.

Families can enrol in either block, in either order, or complete both for the full 10-week programme.

Block One: What Makes Us Want to Learn and Achieve?

5 weeks

Students explore:

- intrinsic and extrinsic motivation
- psychological needs
- Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
- deficiency and growth needs
- positive reinforcement
- rewards and shaping behaviour
- token economies, praise and reinforcement in education
- psychological research into motivation and learning

Block Two: The Drivers & Barriers of Motivation to Exercise

5 weeks

Students explore:

- biological drives and arousal
- the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems
- biological instincts and fixed-action patterns
- Hull’s Drive Reduction Theory
- homeostasis
- Self-Determination Theory
- competence, relatedness and autonomy
- intrinsic and extrinsic motivation to exercise
- persistence, dropout and barriers to exercise

Each block is designed to stand alone, so students do not need to complete Block One before joining Block Two.

How the course works

Monday 2.30 pm (NZT) Teaching Session

This is the main weekly class where I teach the key psychological concepts, theories and research.

Students taking the course for general interest attend the Monday session only.

Friday 9.00 am (NZT) IGCSE Tutorial. 30–45 minutes

Students following the IGCSE pathway also attend the Friday tutorial, where we:

- review independent learning
- clarify concepts
- practise Cambridge-style and exam-style questions
- apply psychology to unfamiliar scenarios
- develop exam technique
- provide feedback on practice responses

All main teaching sessions are recorded and added to Google Classroom, so students can revisit the content or catch up if needed.

Course Dates

Block One
17 August – 21 September

Block Two
12 October – 16 November

The course is based on the Cambridge IGCSE Psychology syllabus and is suitable both for students preparing for the IGCSE examination and for teens who simply want to explore psychology in a structured and engaging way.

Rather than simply memorising theories, students will learn to recognise psychology in everyday life, apply ideas to real situations, and begin thinking like psychologists.
