A warm (and slightly belated!) welcome to Sarah Whitworth, who joined the Green Prescription team at Sport Whanganui earlier this yearšŸ’š

Sarah has quickly become a valued part of the Sport Whanganui whānau. We're incredibly grateful for the quiet support she has brought to Deb and the wider team over the past few months.

Recently, Sarah introduced chair-based exercise classes which have proved so popular we've added extra sessions to meet demand!

Green Prescription (GRx) is a free programme that supports people to improve their health and wellbeing through physical activity, with personalised support to help them get started and stay active. Ask your GP, nurse or health provider to make a referral or contact our team to get started today.

He aituā, he mamae, he poroporoaki

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our friend and colleague, Darren Wallace, peacefully at home.

Darren had worked alongside his partner, Deb, as part of the Sport Whanganui Green Prescription team since 2022. As the Green Prescription Kaiāwhina, Darren supported clients to achieve their health goals through one-on-one coaching and mentoring, leading initiatives such as Active Teens programmes and kaumātua fitness classes. He also worked with community organisations like Te Oranganui supporting tāngata whai ora, or those in need of care or going through treatment processes in mental health.

Darren will be forever remembered by our team for his warmth, positive energy and his deep knowledge and enthusiasm for sport and music. He and Deb were an incredibly special part of our Sport Whanganui whānau and our team is wrapped around Deb supporting her throughout this journey.

Those wishing to share a memory of Darren or send a message to his whānau can email Sport Whanganui, who will pass on all messages to Deb.

Darren will be farewelled at St. Mary's at 10am on Thursday, 27 August.

We extend our love and condolences to Darren's whānau, the Sport Whanganui Green Prescription community, former colleagues and the many people whose lives Darren positively impacted through his manaakitanga and friendship.

Kaua e mate wheke, mate ururoa.

The octopus are renowned for their lack of resistance when being captured, however a hammerhead shark will fight bitterly to the end. This is a commonly used whakatauki to encourage someone not to give up, no matter how hard the struggle is.

Darren embodied this proverb to the fullest and continues to encourage all of us to keep fighting.

Hoki wairua atū rā e te matua. Haere atu rā ki te kainga tūturu mō tātou i te tangata, nō reira haere, moe mai, kāti.

Next up in our ā€˜Our Mahi’ series, meet our Kaiārahi WhakaurÅ«ru | Diversity and Inclusion Lead, Sarah Craig!

As our Kaiārahi WhakaurÅ«ru | Diversity and Inclusion Lead, Sarah’s focuses on creating opportunities and reducing barriers so tamariki and rangatahi with disabilities can participate, connect, and be active.

Some days, that means running a Sport Ability event where tamariki can try out new activities alongside their peers. Other days, it’s working alongside schools, clubs and community organisations to build confidence and capability for inclusive practice. Sarah is also the organiser and biggest supporter of the mighty Whanganui team that attends the Halberg Games in Auckland each year.

Fun fact: Sarah also answers to ā€œGreenieā€, a nickname we use so often around the office that sometimes we forget it isn’t her actual name! šŸ’š

What is orienteering, and why is it so much fun? šŸ—ŗļøšŸƒ

We caught up with Danielle Turner-Steele and Liam Cunningham from Marton School to hear about what orienteering is and what they enjoy most about it!

After watching our tamariki put their navigation skills to the test, it’s easy to see why orienteering is such a great way to get active, explore and have fun outdoors.

A safer space to play, explore and belong! šŸ’›

We’re so excited to see the new playground fence completed at Hakeke Community Centre and Library, helping make this valued community space more accessible and inclusive for tamariki and whānau.
