Wrong makes right at Wanganui East Bowling Club

Wanganui East Bowling Club have a great way to turn a wrong into a right. The club has a well-established fundraising ritual; every time a bowler on the green throws a ‘wrong bias’ bowl, which means, instead of the bowl curving toward the target, it curves away and veers off course, the player needs to make a gold coin donation in the ‘wrong bias’ box in the clubrooms. Directly above the box sits a bell which must be rung once for each wrong bias bowl delivered. It’s a bit of fun for a great cause, because the money in the box is donated to a different charity each time it is full. The charity this time is Stroke Wanganui.

Judith Massey, who has been involved with Stroke Wanganui for the past 21 years and president for six years, is very grateful for the donation of $230, delivered by Wanganui East Bowling Club President Peter Head and Treasurer John McCall.

“The money will be used for our members. Once a year, we take them on an outing, fully paid for by the club. It costs them nothing, and we cover transport for those who need electric wheelchairs. This donation will help fund our next outing. We are very grateful to the Wanganui East Bowling Club for their support,” says Judith.

The Wanganui Stroke Support Group, which has about 40 members, also meet once a month, where they have a variety of activities, sometimes music entertainment, and always a speaker. Most importantly, members get to leave their worries at the door.

The Wanganui East Bowling Club has around 100 members who also value connection and socialising. Their all-weather facility means they can play all year round.

The clubrooms are also open to other groups, who can join as social members. Social members have the same access to the facilities as playing members, except they cannot play bowls. For example, a Mahjong club meets in the clubroom every week.

Community and connection is important, and Peter Head says, “Our club is very proud to be involved with worthy recipients.”
