This week we are looking into movement that can support people with Parkinsons. Starting off with Pilates.
Parkinsons is the second most common neurodegenerative disease in the world.
Some research into the use of Pilates for people with Parkinsons has shown to increase strength, functional movement, balance, and helps lengthen the muscles, fascia, ligaments etc.
Parkinsons tightens the body and pulls everything inwards, whereas specific Pilates exercises can open the body the other way.
With someone who has Parkinsons, one of the key components of Classical Pilates is the positive impact on your nervous system. It requires focus and a total mind body connection.
It is however important to remember that not all Pilates is created equally.
In Classical Pilates there is a lot of flexion (forward bending). Extension exercises and hip stabilisation improves the gait and this is of key importance to a body that has Parkinson’s.
You must be mindful who you start your journey with. Exercises need to be adapted for the person so that in the end the best outcome and quality of life for the client is the goal.
