🚲 What a fantastic day for our community!

A huge congratulations to the organisers of this fantastic community event - EBOP Community Network and Chris Ford Events. What a brilliant way to bring local organisations, clubs and community groups together and help people discover just how much is happening in our community.

There are so many budding cyclists out there, and it was fantastic to meet people with such a great knowledge and passion for cycling. 🚲💙

We were also absolutely thrilled to see such a deserving winner of the biking prize!

This young cyclist had unfortunately suffered an injury while wearing his old helmet, which meant that helmet could no longer be used. So it was a real pleasure to see him walk away with a brand-new helmet combo prize. We couldn’t have wished for a more deserving winner. ❤️

It was also great to see families, young people and adults all getting involved, making connections, finding out about local groups and discovering activities and services they may not even have known were available.

Carolyn Hamill, Whakatāne District Councillor and Sasha Cessford - Whakātane-Ōhope Community Board had an absolute heap of fun representing the Bike Trust! 😄🚲.

A massive thank you and congratulations to everyone involved in putting the event together. Events like this are such a great reminder of what an amazing range of people, organisations, clubs and opportunities we have right here in our community.

We absolutely loved taking part in this Light Up Whakatane Festival and especially the Light Up Your Bike workshop and Light UP Whakatane Parade. A huge shoutout to everyone that joined us on wheels , Eastern Bay Road Safety Programme for teaming up with us and to the event teams Trust Horizon Light up Whakatāne - Light Festival for your awesome mahi which allows this magic to happen in our town!

Thanks to all our riders (and scooters) in tonight’s 🚴‍♀️💡 Light Up Your Bike Workshop and ride, 💡🚴‍♂️ as part of the Light Up Whakatane Festival!

The Comm. hosted us and cooked up some beautiful hot chips and the Eastern Bay Road Safety Programme contributed some amazing lights.

We had so much fun, got super creative and got to bike at Trust Horizon Light up Whakatāne - Light Festival’s super cool winter festival! 🌟🚴‍♀️🚴‍♂️

And, watching the lit up Waka on the Water from the old isite building was amazing.

If you’re keen on joining us again for Fridays parade, meet at The Gap at 5:30pm ready to ride along The Strand at 6pm!

The Government has confirmed it'll soon make changes to some road rules. Here are 2 changes relating to cycling: The Government will change the rules to:
• Allow children up to 12 years old to ride bikes on footpaths and allow parents or caregivers to ride with them.
• Allow people to ride e-scooters in cycle lanes.
• Require a minimum passing gap of 1.5 metres when drivers pass other road users, such as someone driving and passing a person cycling, when it's safe to do so.
In terms of next steps, Government is currently drafting amendments to the Land Transport Rules to reflect these changes. Subject to Cabinet approval, these changes will come into effect later this year.
