Buller Gorge Marathon

For more than 40 years, the Buller Gorge Marathon has been proudly supported by the people, businesses and industries that make up our Buller community.

Over those years, the mining industry and the people within it have been great supporters of our event, through sponsorship, participation, volunteering and getting behind the Marathon year after year.

Like so many organisations and events across Buller, we understand the important role these industries play in supporting local families, businesses and our wider community.

Buller has so much to offer and an exciting future ahead. Continuing to strengthen and diversify our region takes time, and a strong local economy gives our community the stability and breathing room to do that.

Today we're happy to return some of the support that has been shown to the Buller Gorge Marathon over the years.

A group of community members from Buller have come together to make sure the voices of those who support the continuation of Stockton Mine are heard. We’ve created an Open Letter supporting the Buller Plateaux Continuation Project.

Why?

The continuation of the mine reaches far beyond the mine itself. It affects the families who rely on the jobs, the over 100 local businesses Stockton supports, the schools and clubs, and every person in a district that has already lived through one major industry collapse, multiple closures, and does not want to go backwards again.

We also say plainly that mining has environmental impacts and people hold different views about them. Our support does not mean support at any cost.
