Citizen's arrest rules now in force: Police's guide to doing it legally 25/08/2026

The new Citizen's Arrest rules are now in force. For some, this is good news and gives some business owners certain rights to take action to protect their own safety and in some cases their property before Police arrives. However, as this article recommends, Police wants you to know what you can/can't do legally, so give it a read. With freedom comes responsibility! So get training, and get informed:

Knowing the legality is one thing, but having 1) actual physical hands-on experience, 2) scenario training and 3) pressure-tested holding techniques that works (without causing grievous bodily harm or use of excessive force) is going to be a game changer for you. Holding someone who is actively resisting is hard, plus risky for both suspect and the person intervening. But with the right training with the right people, it can give you and your team the edge in dealing with unpleasant situations at your workplace.

If you, your business or organisation would like to discuss options on gaining some hands on experience + scenario training + control & restraint techniques that are safe and works, please get in touch with us:

Citizen's arrest rules now in force: Police's guide to doing it legally Any Crimes Act offence, any time, can now trigger a citizen's arrest. But there are strict rules for staying on the right side of the law.

The instinctive reactionary-speed difference between experienced students who have done the reps, versus those who are just starting out is obvious. Train to get good. Defend the attack, counter-attack on a vulnerable target eye, groin etc as soon as possible, then follow on by…... Well you’ll have to come to class to find out the rest.

Much can go wrong still from there (especially when attack is more aggressive than this), so you need the full sequence of ‘principles’ (not techniques) to finish the job but still in accordance with law. Always finish the job and get gone.

Casual training will only get you casual results. Come train with us and see the difference.

Jogger allegedly attacked in Epsom rampage says she was lucky she ‘could fight’ 07/08/2026

Lots of coverage in the news at the moment of this tragic incident. Couple of things stand out:

1 - It’s always in that first 5-10min window before police arrives that most damage is done.
2 - When someone has fight training (in this case the female jogger), she was able to cope and respond better to the incident (in a much more empowered way - with a goal - and determination to follow through). She will also likely suffer much less psychological trauma in the aftermath, as she says so herself in this article. Even though she was ambushed from behind, she kept fighting.
3 - Any member of the public or bystanders who have no training, will always often not know what to do. They will likely freeze, stand around and watch (or heaven-forbid just take out a camera), and either not be able to help, or choose not to help.

Conclusion: Get training. Learn to fight. Not for ego or winning titles, but for self-improvement and personal achievement. Whether it’s kickboxing, ground grappling, or Krav Maga. The more you train the better for yourself, and everyone around you, when chaos occurs. Mind you, only Krav Maga will teach you how to defend ambushes from behind!

Not saying you can solve every problem with training. We can’t. But having an empowered mindset in itself, that confidence and determination within you, will make a huge positive impact for all.

Prayers for healing to the dogwalker who traumatically lost her dog and for the teen cyclists to come through and recover strong.

My Friday two cents worth. Have a good peaceful weekend everyone.

Cheers
Wil

Does developing good habits, techniques and good fight biomechanics matter for self defence? Yes. Why? Not because it needs to look ‘good’ (as real violence is ugly), but because under duress, your body will not function the same as you do under relaxed conditions. Cognitive overload occurs along with an adrenal dump. Your techniques can generally deteriorate by about 30-40% of accuracy, while your physicality increases with adrenaline. So physical training ought to focus on building solid muscle memory and technical excellence. Thankfully, this is quite satisfying to do with consistent attendance, and feels great when you achieve it. Do the reps, create muscle memory, get sharp, stay fit, feel good 👍

We can’t neglect our ground game, but ground strategies for self defence is not the same as sports. Submissions and joint locks are certainly options, but ultimately our goal is extraction. The sooner we get there the better. Hence why we also fight dirty. Do develop ground game, but self defence is not a game. So we must also fight fast simple and dirty. Punching the groin to break the guard? Yes sir.
