Trainee Day - Thursday 8 October
The CSC 2026 Trainee Programme offers a lecture series as well as two dedicated trainee places across selected workshops, giving emerging clinicians the chance to learn directly from experts, collaborate with peers, and gain hands‑on experience in a supportive environment.

Trainees will be immersed in real‑world clinical discussions, exposed to current best practice, and encouraged to develop the confidence and capability needed to contribute meaningfully to perioperative care.

Ka mahuta a Matariki i te pae, ka mahuta ō tātou tūmanako ki te tau
When Matariki rises above the horizon, our aspirations rise to the year ahead.

This past year seems to have flown by, which makes it all the more important to matariki ahunga nui, to gather together and give thanks for what we have. The NZSA has plenty to celebrate in the wonderful community we get to represent and support.

Alongside many achievements, including:
✨Advocacy: A surge in advocacy-related mahi, each time raising the voice of anaesthesia. Including in advocating for clinical input in the ongoing governance of outsourcing with HNZ and Southern Cross Health Society’s recent eligibility criteria changes.
✨✨Community: The success of the committees and networks, working together to improve care for patients and the environmental footprint of anaesthesia, and supporting our colleagues in the Pacific region. Gathering with some of the Society’s past presidents at the 2025 AGM (November) and awarding the 2025 NZSA President’s Award. Joining our international community at the WFSA’s World Congress and the Common Issues Group meeting earlier this year.
✨Education: Outstanding educational events organised by our generous community of volunteers. Including the Aotearoa NZ Anaesthesia ASM, PANNZ educational meeting, and Inpatient Pain Network meeting. Introducing our new member webinar series with Te reo Māori in a clinical setting.

✨More resources: Both te reo Māori resources, and translated patient education resources at myanaesthesia.nz and pain medicine discharge forms have been added to the website.

Our community has mourned the passing of well-respected and valued members of the Aotearoa anaesthesia whānau over the past year. Their loss has been felt deeply. The NZSA expresses its condolences and aroha as we take a moment to matariki hunga nui – remember those who we have lost since the last Matariki.
Nā koutou i tangi, nā tatau katoa – when you cry, your tears are shed by us all.

Dr Turner is the 2025 recipient of the BWT Ritchie Scholarship.
