Kind words that still mean a lot to us ❤️
Sometimes the simplest feedback says it all.
Behind every piece of work at OMS is a real person helping to keep things moving, solve the little problems and make the business side of things that bit easier.
Fiona has been part of the OMS team since 2006, bringing years of experience in accounts administration and payroll, along with support across accounting software, troubleshooting and training.
Whether she’s working from the OMS office or visiting a client at their workplace, Fiona enjoys the variety that comes with supporting different businesses and their individual needs.
And feedback like Dave’s is a lovely reminder of what matters most to us: being there when our clients need a hand ❤️

📢 A new Employment Leave Act is coming. What does that mean for employers?
The Employment Leave Act 2026 is set to take effect from 6 August 2028, bringing changes to how employee leave is earned, taken and paid.
It might sound like something you need to start preparing for immediately, but the good news is:
👉 There’s nothing you need to action right now.
For now, the best thing you can do is stay informed and familiarise yourself with the upcoming changes. Official information and updates are available at employment.govt.nz.
As we get closer to 2028, there will be guidance to help employers prepare. Some of the areas that will eventually need attention include:
✓ Payroll systems
✓ Employment agreements
✓ Workplace policies
✓ Pay statements and leave records
Swipe through the carousel for a simple breakdown of what’s changing, when it starts and what you’ll need to think about 👉
And if you work with OMS, we’ll be keeping an eye on the changes too. When the time comes, we’ll help take care of the necessary updates so you can keep your focus on running your business.
Let’s have a quick coffee and see how we can help ☕❤️

Meet Ruan, one of the friendly faces behind OMS! 👋❤️
Born in Centurion, South Africa, Ruan moved to Alexandra with his parents when he was 13 and went through high school right here in Central Otago.
Ruan was born with Spina Bifida, a physical disability that has brought challenges along the way, but certainly hasn’t stopped him from doing the things he loves.
💻 All things tech
🏋️ Keeping active in his home gym
🎸 Playing guitar and singing at his church
❤️ Helping people in his community
His interest in admin and IT began around the age of 16 while exploring different courses at high school. His path later led him towards counselling, which he is now studying at MIT while working as an Office Assistant here at OMS.
For Ruan, there’s something important connecting his studies and his work: helping others.
He deeply enjoys supporting people in his community and feels that being part of OMS gives him another way to do that while he studies.
And a little more about Ruan? He has two older brothers and a beautiful dog named Violet, who recently welcomed five adorable puppies! 🐶❤️
We love having Ruan as part of the OMS team. Say hi to Ruan in the comments! 👋

If your bookkeeping is very overdue, knowing where to start can feel like the hardest part 😅
Maybe it started with a few receipts you’d sort out later... then a busy month happened, then another, and suddenly there’s a much bigger backlog waiting for you.
The key is to tackle it one step at a time.
Start with the oldest outstanding period, gather your records, reconcile your accounts and work forward.
Along the way, keep an eye out for missing receipts, duplicate transactions, coding errors and anything that still needs to be filed.
Once you’re caught up, getting into a regular bookkeeping routine can help keep everything organised and stop another backlog from quietly building.
Months behind? Or even longer? We can help you work through the backlog and get your books back on track ❤️

A friendly GST reminder for Kiwi businesses ❤️
If your GST taxable period ended on 31 July 2026, your GST return and payment are due by Friday, 28 August 2026.
Before the due date arrives, take a little time to:
✅ Check that your sales and income are recorded
✅ Review your business purchases and expenses
✅ Make sure your receipts and supporting records are complete
✅ Confirm that your GST return and payment are ready
Remember, a GST return still needs to be filed even when there is no GST to pay.
Keeping your bookkeeping tidy throughout the period can make GST time feel clearer and much more manageable.
Would you like support preparing your GST or keeping your business records up to date? Our friendly local team would be happy to help.

Having the right reports in place can make such a difference to how clearly you understand your business.
A well-structured budget, together with reports that suit your organisation’s needs, can help you keep track of where things stand, plan ahead and make more informed decisions with confidence.
Sometimes, it is not about adding more information. It is about knowing which reports are most useful and making sure they are set up in a way that is easy to understand.
Thank you to Uruuruwhenua Health Inc for trusting us to help make Xero and financial reporting work more effectively for your needs ❤️

Before you cut costs, take a closer look at what each expense is helping your business achieve.
When costs rise, reducing expenses can feel like the quickest way to protect profit. Some expenses may be adding little value, while others help your business save time, stay organised, support customers, and manage more work effectively.
The key is to separate waste from genuine business support.
Instead of only asking:
“How much does this cost?”
It can also help to ask:
“What value does this create?”
There is another side to the conversation as well. Improving profit is not only about reducing costs. It may also involve reviewing your pricing, following up unpaid invoices, retaining good customers, or finding new ways to generate income from the resources already available within your business.
This week’s Tips & Tricks focuses on reviewing costs carefully before making cuts. Next week, we’ll take a closer look at opportunities to strengthen income and support sustainable business growth.

Sometimes the best conversations happen away from the office. 🌴✨
Our Mid-Winter Christmas get-together at Paulina’s Bar in Clyde was the perfect chance to step away from the numbers and enjoy some time together in its relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.
The evening was filled with great conversations, plenty of laughter, rugby on the screen, and a little friendly competition for the best-dressed outfit.
Congratulations to Bruce for fully embracing the theme with his wonderfully bright shirt! 🌺👏
Moments like these are a lovely reminder of how important it is to make time for connection, fun, and shared memories as a team. ❤️

Why aren’t an owner’s drawings recorded as a business expense?
When you take money from your business for personal use, it may feel like the business has “paid” you.
However, for bookkeeping purposes, owner’s drawings are generally recorded as money taken from the owner’s equity rather than as an expense of running the business.
Business expenses are costs connected with earning income, such as wages paid to employees, rent, software, supplies, insurance, or vehicle costs relating to the business.
Owner’s drawings are different. They are a withdrawal of money that already belongs to the owner, so they reduce the amount of equity left in the business rather than reducing its profit.
This is why your Profit and Loss report may show a profit even though there is less money sitting in the bank after you have paid yourself.
The way payments to an owner are handled can depend on whether the business is a sole trader, partnership, or company, so it is important to have them recorded correctly.
Clear bookkeeping helps you see the difference between:
• what the business has earned
• what it has spent
• and what the owner has withdrawn
