What does bird flu mean for game bird hunting?
Short answer: hunting continues, with some sensible precautions.
No game bird species have tested positive for H5N1, and hunting continues.
We've answered the questions hunters are asking, covering hunting, handling and cooking your birds, hunting with dogs, and reporting sick or dead birds.
Read the FAQ on this page: https://www.fishandgame.org.nz/environment/bird-flu-hpai-h5n1/
And if you see three or more sick or dead birds in one place, don't touch them. Report them to MPI's Exotic Pest and Disease Hotline on 0800 80 99 66 or use the form here report.mpi.govt.nz

The Rangitaiki River is looking great at the moment and is another good option over winter for anglers looking for something different!!
Recreational access through Kaingaroa Forest to the river as well as Flaxy Lakes and canals is open to the end of September on weekends, so get a permit from First Security in Rotorua and get out and enjoy the unique fishing opportunities out in the forest.
As well as the river, Lakes Aniwhenua and Matahina are also worth a look. Enjoy and good luck!

🚨 IMPORTANT | Bird flu (H5N1) confirmed in New Zealand for the first time.
MPI has confirmed a detection of H5N1 bird flu in a Brown Skua at Petone. Fish & Game is working with MPI and DOC on the national response.
At this time there’s no evidence in mass mortality in wildlife, or transmission, or between wild birds in NZ. Also no detection in poultry
What hunters need to know:
✅ Game bird hunting can continue
Don't touch sick or dead birds that your hunting party haven’t shot. Watch dogs and children don’t touch the birds
🧹 Clean gear between every outing
🤲 Wash and dry your hands after handling birds
📞 Three or more sick or dead birds? Call 0800 80 99 66 immediately
We'll keep you updated as things develop.
