Sauna Recovery for Farmers and Rural NZ
If your day starts at 4am and your back's reminding you why, a sauna might be the recovery tool you've overlooked. Research into sauna use suggests regular heat exposure supports muscle recovery and reduces physical tension—exactly what farmers and outdoor workers need after long hours.
Whether you're off-grid and want the ritual of wood-fired The Anu, or need the convenience of an electric model, a genuine Finnish sauna becomes part of your routine. Not a luxury. A tool.

There is a moment about six weeks into a sauna habit where it is raining, the session you wanted is booked out, and the drive is thirty five minutes return.
That is usually when people start asking whether they should just own one.
So we ran the numbers properly.
Two bathhouse sessions a week at $25 costs about $2,600 a year. Per person. Every year, for as long as you keep the habit.
Running your own sauna twice a week costs about $420 a year in power — and that covers everyone in the household, not one person.
The sauna is the only one of those with an end date. Most owners are square inside two to three years. Everything after that is essentially free heat.
But the real argument is not the money. The most cited sauna research in the world followed 2,315 Finnish men for nearly 21 years. The benefits scaled with frequency: four to seven sessions a week showed a 63% lower risk of sudden cardiac death and a 40% lower risk of death from any cause compared with once a week.
Four to seven sessions a week is achievable when the sauna is twenty steps away. It is close to impossible when it involves a car, a booking and a queue.
To be fair to the bathhouses — if you sauna once a fortnight, or you rent, or you are still working out whether you love it, go and use them. They are good and they are the right first step.
But if you are already going twice a week, you are renting something you could own.

Sauna and sleep quality - There's something about an evening sauna that changes how you sleep—and it's not marketing speak. After you step out of the heat, your body temperature drops significantly, which is precisely what primes deep, restorative sleep. It's become our family's evening ritual. Step out into the cool air, and something just shifts. The quality of rest that follows feels genuinely different. If sleep's been elusive, it's worth trying. Head over to the blog to read more about evening sauna routines.

Infrared or traditional? Here's the honest answer.
Infrared runs cooler — around 45–60°C — and it's gentle, easy to sit in, and simple to install indoors. For some people that's genuinely the right call, and we'll never pretend otherwise.
But here's the part worth knowing. Almost all the long-term research on saunas and health was done on traditional Finnish heat at 80–100°C — the Kuopio study that followed 2,315 men for 20 years and found sharply lower risk of dementia and heart disease in regular users.
It's why longevity experts like Dr Rhonda Patrick and Dr Peter Attia build their sauna protocols around traditional high heat — temperatures a typical infrared cabin simply can't reach.
That, and löyly: the rush of steam off hot stones that infrared can't give you. On a cold NZ winter night, there's nothing like it.
We build traditional — Harvia heaters, 38mm thermally modified Nordic pine, made to last. Not because infrared is bad, but because we think the real Finnish thing is worth it.
We broke the full comparison down — temperatures, the science, and which suits your home — on the blog. Or call us, we're a family business in Rotorua and we pick up the phone. 021 244 8261.

A small thing we've noticed.
When we put the sauna in, we thought of it as a health decision. Recovery, sleep, the research on cardiovascular benefit — all the reasons you'd expect.
What we didn't anticipate was that it would become the place our family actually talks to each other. Three boys, no phones allowed, twenty minutes with nothing else to do. Conversations happen in there that don't happen anywhere else in the house.
In Finland this isn't a discovery — it's the whole point. The sauna has always been where the household gathers. Anu grew up knowing that.
We build these because we think New Zealand families deserve the real version of it. Not a warm cupboard. Proper Finnish heat, in a cabin built to last a generation.

Winter is when a sauna earns its place.
Anyone doing physical work through a New Zealand July knows what the cold does to a body over a season. Stiff mornings. Sore backs. Sleep that doesn't quite reset you.
Heat therapy is one of the few recovery tools that works on all three at once — deep muscle warmth, better circulation, and a measurable drop in cortisol that shows up as better sleep the same night.
Our cabins are built from 38mm thermally modified Nordic Pine and run on single phase household power. Delivered nationwide, assembled in a day. From $7,800.
Wondering about running costs? We published the full breakdown this week — about $3.35 a session. It's on the blog.

"What's it actually going to cost me to run?"
It's the question we're asked more than any other, and it's usually the last one before someone makes a decision. So we sat down and worked it out properly — heater draw, current power prices, and how a sauna actually behaves across a session rather than how it looks on a spec sheet.
The short version: about $3.35 a session for an 8kW cabin at the national average power price. Four sessions a week comes to roughly $13 — less than a gym membership, and considerably less than one wellness centre visit.
The full breakdown is on the blog now, including a table by heater size and the three things that genuinely move the number. No marketing spin, just the maths.

Hot. Cold. Hot. Cold. Then nothing.
That's the protocol Finnish families have followed for centuries — sauna, then a plunge into a frozen lake, then sauna again. It's only in the last decade that the research has caught up to what they already knew: contrast therapy does something neither the heat nor the cold can do on its own.
What the studies are showing:
— faster muscle recovery after training
— a real lift in mood and alertness
— better sleep that same night
— stronger circulation over time
Two or three rounds is plenty. Fifteen minutes in the sauna, ninety seconds in the ice bath, then back in. Finish on the cold so your body has to warm itself.
We built the Tomas Ice Bath as a companion to our saunas precisely because the two work better together. If you've been thinking about one, weigh up both.
