🍃 Seasonal gifts of Te Taiao in Aotearoa 👀

🌿 Kawakawa Fruit — Tākawa

In summer, the female kawakawa plant produces bright orange berries: tākawa. ✨

The flesh of the berry has a sweet tropical flavour and a peppery spice which is released when biting the tiny inner seeds.

The Māori would gather tākawa seasonally in summer and used as a natural diuretic to support bladder health and reduce water retention. 🌱

A small but vibrant reminder of the abundance woven throughout the forests of Aotearoa.

🍃 Hidden characters of Te Taiao in Aotearoa 👀

🌿 Rangiora — Brachyglottis repanda

Known to many as “bushman’s toilet paper”, rangiora is a distinctive native shrub recognised by it's broad paper-like leaves and velvety texture and soft, white undersides ✨

The large leaves were traditionally applied externally to soothe wounds and skin irritations due to their antiseptic qualities.

Despite its gentle appearance, rangiora should never be eaten, as the plant is toxic if chewed or swallowed. 🌱

🍃 Small wonders of Te Taiao in Aotearoa 👀

🐦 Fantail — Pīwakawaka

The fantail is one of New Zealand’s best known birds, with its distinctive fanned tail and loud song, and particularly because it often approaches within a metre or two of people.

In Māori mythology, the fantail was responsible for the presence of death in the world. Maui, thinking he could eradicate death by successfully passing through the goddess of death, Hine-nui-te-po, tried to enter the goddess’s sleeping body through the pathway of birth. The fantail, warned by Maui to be quiet, began laughing and woke Hine-nuite-po, who was so angry that she promptly killed Maui. ✨

🌿 Hound’s Tongue Fern — Kōwaowao

A beautiful native fern of Aotearoa, known for its glossy and leathery bright-green fronds and creeping rhizomes that spread across forest floors and tree trunks. Young plants grow smooth, tongue-shaped fronds — giving the fern its distinctive name. ✨

Another edible plant, which can be eaten raw and fresh or cooked. The younger fronds are softer and considered more palatable with a mild and buttery flavour. It has a gentle nuttiness — often likened to green beans or macadamia.
