Last week in Tokyo 3 of our Queenstown Jiu Jitsu team travelled to the IBJJF Asian Open in Tokyo. This is the largest event run by IBJJF in Asia / Oceania and runs over 5 days.

had a hard first round and was pushing the attack on a good guard player. The score was all tied at the end and the Referee decision went to his opponent which surprised us but that’s the way it goes. Carl is now travelling to Melbourne to go again in the Australian nationals in a few weeks. Might be super heavy by the time he gets there though. Let’s go Carl 🥷

came in seeded first but had a very tough first up against an ADCC trials competitor and came away with a loss. Signed up for the open weight - up against one of the best girls in Asia who she also lost to in the finals last year. Molly had zero pressure and came away with a foot lock submission before the round ended. Molly was 1 hook away from making podium in the open weight before time ran out in the quarter final she is now in Oahu getting ready for the Honolulu International Open this weekend, then back to Melbourne for more training.

(master 20 ) got nice and warm but his first opponent didn’t turn up so spent almost 2 hours in the bullpen waiting for him to be dqd. Straight to the finals with a 26 second submission for the heavyweight gold. Open weight first round was against a coral belt which not many people get the chance to compete against. Submission win and onto the semifinal and with another collar choke from half guard onto the final. The half guard pass popped the old boys knee but he carried on to contest the final anyway and lost by points for silver in the open weight.
Last seen hobbling around Oahu trying to find a magic potion to sort the knee out in time for the weekends tournament 😂

.jitz had no opponents in the juvenile green belt division at the tournament today so we went in his first adults division and went double gold all submissions in the adult blue belt. 🥇🥇

Well done.

Pedro helps teach the kids classes at the gym so it’s great to see him showcasing his skills under pressure. Kids registrations to train with Pedro are open for term 3 now.

Sam gets his first tournament win under his belt today in Dunedin.
