What a turnout! 🏐🔥

​The energy over the last three Fridays has been absolute magic with our whānau volleyball activation! Those 40-minute rounds have been the perfect way to blow off the cobwebs and bring out some healthy, fun social competition.

​On Friday, August 14th, we leveled up! We seized the opportunity to run a Volleyball Referees Course for our Igniting Potential In Rangatahi crew and the wider community, led by our very own Jovan.

Jovan was exceptional—her delivery and engagement made sure everyone walked away with the basics well and truly locked down.
​In fact, Jovan shared that this was the largest group of participants they've ever had for a referee course! That speaks volumes about the passion, drive, and eagerness to learn right here in Northland. 👏

​We’re excited to keep this momentum going by running these referee sessions fortnightly. By building our whānau’s confidence on the whistle, we ensure high-quality, fair, and fun games for everyone. ​Because at the end of the day: "Without the referees, there is no game."

​Huge shoutout to our incredible MNCC_INTHEK crew who stepped up at the Mahi Pai event at Papa Hawaiki.

​From being the very first friendly faces greeting whānau at the door and sharing the event's kaupapa, to staying right through until the end—cleaning up, packing down stations, and getting stuck into the hard work. Their dedication was next level!

​We are truly blessed to work alongside our community on the ground and to help deliver meaningful opportunities to our people.

The stage is set for our emerging juniors and established youth as the best of the best from all four Northern provinces will look to collide on one action-packed Saturday.

Whānau, thank you for your patience as we worked through the process to confirm the host venue for the 2027 Māori Touch NZ Tamariki Tournament.

Following a shortlisting process, our Māori Touch NZ Trustees met this week to consider the remaining options. We are pleased to officially announce that Whangārei has been selected as the host location for the 2027 Tamariki Tournament.

The decision to take the event to Te Tai Tokerau reflects the strength of the tono received from E Ngāki Trust, alongside a clear commitment to collaboration from key stakeholders, including Whangārei District Council.

Māori Touch NZ Trustee Patariki Spellman says the decision followed a highly competitive process:

“I’m proud of Māori Touch NZ for the incredible amount of mahi undertaken as part of this process. We had six opportunities in front of us - all pretty choice and definitely capable of hosting Tamariki 2027”

“It’s been a while since a national touch tournament has been held in the North, so it feels right. I had the privilege of calling Takoha to share the news, and it’s fair to say the pre-event mahi is already underway - Te Tai Tokerau is excited.”

The 2027 MTNZ Tamariki Tournament will be held on Saturday 23 – Sunday 24 January 2027 at Kensington Sports Park in Whangārei.

Māori Touch NZ also acknowledges Waikato-Tainui for their continued support and commitment to hosting future kaupapa at Hopuhopu, with intentions to return in 2028.
