A massive shout-out to the 4ths, you bunch of absolute legends. The only Tahuna team to reach a Cup final this season, and thoroughly deserving of their moment.

Third in the league and now playing for silverware, it has been a brilliant season from Colin and his crew. They’ve battled through torn muscles, dodgy knees, failing hamstrings, stuffed shoulders, aching backs, questionable hips, battered ribs, ruined ankles, multiple surgeries and enough scar tissue to set off airport security.

And that’s only Colin.

Now there’s one final hurdle. The game has been moved to Saxton Field S5, where we’re hoping the rain finally gets bored and goes somewhere else.

Let’s get down in numbers, make plenty of noise and give these awesome humans the support they deserve.

Final games for our junior and youth teams this weekend!

⚪ MEC Tahuna U18 Development - What a season. The lads head into their final game on an impressive unbeaten run and looking a completely different side from the one that started the year. We’ve loved having them around the club, with a special shout-out to the handful who stepped up to help our senior teams when ageing bodies and questionable availability struck.

Big thanks to Kev for guiding the lads, keeping everything moving in roughly the right direction.

🔵 Tahuna Matata Girls vs FC Nelson - The girls head into their final game having spent the entire season refusing to lose. There was one draw right at the beginning, while everyone was still figuring things out, and that’s been it. The connection, teamwork and way they back each other has been brilliant to watch.

Credit to Will (and fake Wills - Nige and Joelle) for steering the ship. Whatever next season brings, this group is only getting better.

⚪ All Stars vs Wakefield Saplings - The All Stars travel to Appleby for one last game. At the start of the season, plenty of them were still negotiating the basic relationship between foot and ball. Now they’re playing with shape, purpose and intent, and finishing the year as a proper team.

Jono, Corne and Markel deserve huge credit for the progress, and probably a quiet lie-down. A team full of good eggs and a great addition to the club.

🔵 Tigers vs Golden Bay Rurus - The Tigers head over the hill to face the Rurus in a fixture that sounds more like an incident at Natureland than a football match. They’ve had a dominant season and become a genuine force under Gary and Dale. One last job to finish it off.

Finally, thanks to every parent and grandparent who provided lifts, washed muddy gear, found missing drink bottles, supplied snacks and stood on cold sidelines all season. The kids might not always say it, so we will: you’ve been absolute legends.

Weekend fixture round-up!

⚪ A tough end to the season for the 1sts, who battled for 120 minutes before falling 2-0 to Richmond in their Cup semifinal. Tommy produced some huge saves to keep Tahuna alive, and the boys responded strongly after half-time, with Adam going agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock. Penalties were looming before Richmond found two exceptional top-corner finishes in extra time. A brutal way to bow out after giving everything, but full credit to Richmond and all the best for the final.

🔵 The 2nds lost 3-1 to Richmond in the prestigious battle to determine who was Nelson’s fifth or sixth-best Cup team. Coach Crutchy selected positions at random using playing cards, Captain D**g tried to defect before kick-off and young gun striker Paul ended up in nets. Ross bailed at the break before Pedro scored from halfway, which briefly threatened to make the team look competent. Danny and Will Mathews combined to gift them a 3rd, with the final shot finding the net with the speed of coastal erosion.

⚪ The 3rds lost 6-1 to Locomotive, with Stu delivering one final masterpiece of Stu being Stu. He conceded a controversial penalty, collected a yellow card for calmly explaining the laws of football to the referee and shipped five before half-time. Survival secured, season completed and talks of amputating both hands to avoid playing in goal next year are apparently progressing well.

🔵 THE 4THS ARE INTO THE BLOODY CUP FINAL! Reuben put Tahuna ahead, Ed buried the late winner and the boys held on to survive. Guts, grit, blood and an enormous 2-1 semifinal victory. One more game. UP UP TAHUNA!

⚪ No game for the Women. [insert sad emoji here]

🔵 Before the Masters’ final match of the season, both teams came together for a moving tribute to Evo. Football taking a back seat. The match finished 3-0 to FC Nelson, with Gaz strong in goal and Becs collecting plenty of player-of-the-day votes, but the most important moment came before the first whistle.

A sad day for Nelson football.

Many at Tahuna FC knew and loved Evo, and had the pleasure of playing alongside or against him over the years. He was always ready with some quality banter from between the posts, followed by a beer and a yarn afterwards.

Our thoughts and aroha are with Evo’s family, friends and everyone at FC Nelson. He will be greatly missed.

Rest easy, Evo. 💙

Paul Evans (Evo) passes away peacefully

For those of you who knew, played against, played alongside, kicked a ball at (he was a goalie after all)… or just enjoyed having a beer with Evo from FC Nelson Masters and earlier, from Nelson Metro, it is with great sadness to report that he passed away peacefully overnight at the Nelson Hospice after a battle with cancer. Our thoughts are with Evo's family and friends at this time.

It’s a big loss to the Nelson Football Region and may he rest in peace. He always gave great banter while in goal or in the clubhouse afterwards and always made you welcome win or lose. He’ll be remembered as one of the good buggers. There will be a ‘life celebration’ for Evo at the Victory Square FC Clubrooms this Saturday from 1pm.

Don't forget we're having a senior football shindig this weekend to celebrate the season, Sam, Isaac & Rollo's birthday bashes, and hopefully our 4th XI bringing home the cup!

Weekend fixture PREVIEWS!

🔵 It’s cup semi-final time for the 1sts as they take on Richmond. A few bodies have returned and reinforcements are available from the 2nds and 3rds, so the boys head into this one in better spirits. A good result here and another cup final awaits.

⚪ The 2nds host Richmond 2nds in the opening fixture on S1. The squad is once again down to the bare bones, with the young lads promoted from supporting cast to lead roles. Interim boss Will becomes the fourth manager in as many weeks, which is not ideal preparation. Did Evangelos Marinakis secretly buy the club last month? Stay tuned for updates....

🔵 The 3rds take on Loco in the battle for bottom place in the “Cup”. They’ll be buoyed by last weekend’s goalscoring heroics, although Stu may once again find himself serving as the final line of defence. 🙌

⚪ Casualties have struck the 4ths at the worst possible time, with several key players and their talismanic manager ruled out. It’s been an epic season, so let’s hope the boys can dig deep, find one more big performance and earn themselves a cup final.

🔵 There’s no game for the Women, whose season ended with last weekend’s defaulted fixture.

⚪ Masters host FC Nelson on S3 in what is always a good battle between the two sides. Fortunately, despite a goalkeeper crisis sweeping through the club, they’ve somehow managed to retain Ollie's services.

In Junior and Youth footy:

🔵 The Development XI will be looking to keep their winning streak alive as they travel to Avery Park to face Suburbs Rangers. Confidence is high, the points are there for the taking and there’s still room in the bag for another three.

⚪ Tahuna Matata host the Mini Maidens, who make the trip over the hill from Golden Bay. It’s always a competitive contest between these two sides, and there’s absolutely no reason to expect anyone to start taking it easy now.

🔵 The All Stars take on Motueka at home. The team has really clicked as the season has progressed, with a huge shout-out to Jonni for getting them firing.

⚪ It’s Tigers versus Bears in the battle of Tahuna Zoo. Let’s go, Tigers!

Weekend fixture round-up!

⚪ The 1sts came from 2-0 down to beat the Golden Bay Mountain Goats 3-2 with the bare 11 players. Skinner hit the post and blamed its shape, before Seth and his can of John West climbed the rapids to head home. C***y smashed a free kick through a wall of 10 goats, then Seth nodded in the winner with his rapidly disappearing hairline. C***y earned MVP for goals, assists and goat whispering. Great comeback against a solid opponent. Onto the semifinal!

🔵 The 2nds beat the 3rds 6-5 in a Tahuna derby featuring 11 goals, several injuries and Stu casually throwing the ball into his own net. Young Paul scored four and Lochy made some excellent saves as the 2nds held on. Their report called it a comfortable 7-2 win and gave Paul five, suggesting the football was considerably better than the arithmetic.

⚪ The 3rds lost that same match 6-5, although they at least appear to know what the score was. Sayha scored twice, Thorsten and Binh found the net, and Panith appeared from nowhere to grab his first of the season. Riley and Milosh also made their senior debuts, but the defence became leakier than a Methven tap and Stu’s goalkeeping contribution will now be mentioned forever.

🔵 The 4ths beat Motueka 3rds 2-0 after leaving both goals fashionably late. Adam finally broke the deadlock, Ryan added another and Kyle ran himself into the ground to earn MVP. A clean sheet, a Cup semifinal spot and an afternoon that turned out considerably more comfortable than it looked for the first 80 minutes.

⚪ The Women’s XI had a walkover and easily Tahuna’s least stressful result of the weekend.

🔵 The Masters lost 7-3 to Suburbs Legends in the Memorial Cup semifinal. Kev put Tahuna ahead, Ed converted a penalty and Goody scored via his shin, his personal area and eventually the correct side of the post. At 3-3, Tahuna had every reason to believe. Then Suburbs scored four more, our age and fitness began filing formal complaints, and Kev stepped in dog poo, which became an increasingly accurate metaphor for the closing stages.

⚽ WEEKEND FIXTURE PREVIEWS! ⚽

🔵 The 1st XI head over the hill to battle the Goats. With plenty of players missing, we’ve scraped together a squad from the emergency reserves and somehow found 11 willing bodies. Off into battle we go.

⚪ It’s El Tahunaco Volume III as the 2nd XI face the 3rd XI. With both teams missing half their squads, this is fast shaping up to be a 7-a-side game. Stu's said he is in goal for the first half. Can he keep his first clean sheet of the season? Will he collide with the post? Does anybody care? These are the questions that make El Tahunaco so special.

🔵 The 4ths host Motueka on S2. They’ve had a bloody awesome season, and we’d love to see them add a good cup run to it. Get down and give them some support!

⚪ The Women were due to face Nelson Suburbs 1st XI in a repeat of last weekend’s fixture. Unfortunately, Suburbs have other places to be and have defaulted the game.

🔵 The Masters take on Suburbs Legends at the racetrack. The track itself will be purely decorative, with plenty of slow build-up play and even slower changes of direction expected.

In Junior and Youth footy:

⚪ The Development XI will be looking to continue their impressive recent form and bag a few more points before the season comes to an end.

🔵 Tahuna Matata battle FC Nelson’s Packing Pandas. Hopefully our girls can pack them off home with no points when the final whistle blows.

⚪ The All Stars head to Avery to face Suburbs Academy Girls. They’ve looked super sharp in recent weeks, so let’s keep that going!

🔵 The Tigers are at Champion Green, where they’ll be hoping to avoid getting struck by Lightning. 🐯

Weekend fixture round-up!

⚪ The 1st XI had the weekend off, a well-earned rest following a tiring season.

🔵 The 2nd XI thumped Richmond Thistle 7-1 under interim manager Seth, despite having only eight players five minutes before kick-off. It was one way traffic, with Tahuna scoring 5 goals before half-time as Seth’s tactical masterclass unfolded exactly as he had presumably imagined it. An unbeaten managerial record, seven goals scored and immediate calls for a permanent appointment.

⚪ The 3rd XI lost 3-1 to Locomotive but produced another encouraging performance. Jed finished a lovely team move, Tom made an excellent save, and Binh rattled the crossbar with a late free kick as Tahuna pushed hard for a comeback. Next up, the Thirds face the 2nd XI in a club derby nobody is emotionally prepared for.

🔵 The 4th XI also had the bye. Another flawless defensive performance.

⚪ The Women’s XI were edged 1-0 by a strong Nelson Suburbs side in a tough, physical contest. Tahuna defended bravely, battled through a few injuries and kept fighting until the final whistle, with Taylah producing some outstanding saves to earn MVP.

🔵 The Masters lost 3-0 to Nelson Suburbs after starting with 11 players, one substitute and several suspicious explanations for everyone else’s absence. Diego’s quad lasted 15 minutes, C***y had an eventful afternoon at both ends, and Tahuna defended like mad against the league champions. The match eventually featured a brief melee, red cards, a boot to Batty's face, and lots of post-match beers. Just a normal afternoon of Masters football.
