Sad News:
Passing of Longtime Member Richard Hayward
It is with heavy hearts that we inform our Waahi Taakaro Golf Club - Nelson members of the passing of Richard Hayward (Member #4351114), who passed away this week in Nelson at the age of 72.
Richard was a familiar, warm presence around our club—a regular weekday golfer who loved nothing more than rounding out the week with a round on Friday. A true gentleman on and off the course, his warmth, friendship, and steady presence will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of sharing a fairways walk with him.
On behalf of the entire committee and membership, Waahi Taakaro Golf Club extends our heartfelt condolences to Richard’s wife, Sue, his family, and his close friends.
Rest in peace, Richard. You will be warmly remembered.

Club results for 29/8/26
Paul Tunnicliff is the C&F Legal Stroke champion for 2026 after another solid round in tricky conditions on a blustery Saturday (August 29).
Playing off a 19-handicap from the blue tees, Paul carded a workmanlike 73 to go with his excellent first-round 69 for a winning net total of 142.
This was two better than Gabriel Tijsen on 144 who added another tidy 72 to claim second.
Keri Kotua (72+74) finished third on 146, with Richard Pearson (74+74) fourth on 148.
The round also doubled as the second round of qualifying for the club champs and carried Barkman Trophy points and counted towards Shootout top ten qualification. Scoring was higher than the first round a fortnight ago as a good field of 32 players largely struggled in gusting winds and sticky ground conditions after a day of heavy rain.
Jarrod Huss was the big mover in the Senior Grade, posting the equal top gross of the day, an 81. James Campion shot a matching 81 to take a four-stroke lead with a total of 164. His nearest challengers are Nick Riddell and Keri Kotua on 168 with Jarrod on 173.
Gabriel T stretched his lead in the Intermediate Grade with a second 85 for a two-round total of 170. Peter Watson (176) is leading the chasers who include Bryce Vincent (182) and Graham Galt (185).
Paul T is top of the Junior A standings with a total of 180 followed by Richard Pearson and Gareth Edwards (184 each) and Harry Ambrose (185).
Andrew Craig continues to lead the Junior B grade. His total of 200 is comfortably ahead of Dave Huntley (209) and Phil Sellers and Jack Denton (214 each).
The third and final round of club champs qualifying on September 12 is the last chance to improve positions before the playoffs, with the best two gross scores over three rounds counting.
In the match of the day, Jarod H claimed maximum Barkman points with a net 71. Gabe T (72) finished second, while Blair Joliffe pipped Paul T for third on countback after both came in with 73. Next were Keri K, Graham Eggers, James C and Philip Rogers on 74, with James taking the final Barkman point on countback from Phil.
There were three twos recorded, with Kent Yarrall, Harry A and Keri K each bagging one on No 14. Kent won closest to the pin on No 2.
The 9-holers showed how it was done, with Sue Moyle winning with an eye-watering 24 stableford points for the back nine. Almost as good was John Dryden who totalled 23 points. Paul McCrae, (19), Warren Green (19) and Chris Louth (18) filled the minor places.
Again no-one managed a two so the kitty keeps on rising.
Next week (Sept 5) the 18-holers play another round of the Barkman and Shootout off the white tees with drawn pairs, while the 9-holers play a par round off the front nine.

Notice to All Golfers and Visitors.
Waahi Taakaro Golf Club - Nelson Golf Course Turf Usage Guidelines.
Waahi Taakaro Golf Club and Nelson City Council kindly remind all members and public visitors that course fairways and greens are reserved exclusively for active, registered rounds of golf.
To maintain high-quality course conditions for everyone, practice sessions of any kind are strictly prohibited on the main course.
[Turf Protection Policy
Permitted Play]
Standard, continuous rounds of golf starting from designated tee boxes (18-hole or 9-hole registered play).
[Prohibited Practice] Repeated hitting of practice balls on fairways, chipping onto greens, or taking multiple practice shots from the same spot on the main course.
[Why It Matters] Concentrated wear and tear, divots, and pitch marks from repeated practice shots cause severe damage to the turf, compromising playing surfaces for all members and visitors.
[Designated Practice Areas] Please restrict all warming up, chipping, and putting practice to the designated practice green and warm-up areas prior to your tee time.
We appreciate your cooperation and assistance in respecting the course so we can keep Waahi Taakaro in peak condition year-round.
If you have any questions regarding course usage or wish to book a round, please contact the Waahi Taakaro Golf Shop or the Nelson City Council Parks team. Nelson City Council
