Not every opportunity turns out the way we hope.
And that's part of the journey.
When we step outside our comfort zone, move countries, or embrace a new opportunity, we do so with optimism and a willingness to grow. Sometimes those experiences exceed our expectations. Sometimes they challenge us in ways we never anticipated.
I've learned that even the most difficult experiences have value.
They teach us about resilience.
They strengthen our confidence.
They clarify our values.
And they remind us what we want to carry forward, and what we're prepared to leave behind.
As I leave Bermuda, I'm choosing to focus on the lessons rather than the disappointments. I'm grateful for the wonderful clients I had the privilege of working with, the people who offered kindness and encouragement along the way, and the personal and professional growth that comes from navigating change.
Every chapter, even the challenging ones, helps shape the next.
As I begin a new adventure, I do so with greater clarity about the kind of leader I want to be, the professional standards I value, and the environments where people can truly thrive.
✨ Reflection:
Choose opportunities that align not only with your career goals but also with your values.
Choose workplaces where respect, communication, integrity, and wellbeing are priorities, not afterthoughts.
Because success isn't just about where you work. It's about how you feel while you're doing the work that matters to you.
Here's to new beginnings, fresh opportunities, and carrying the lessons forward.

Working overseas can be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life.
You get to experience a new culture, meet incredible people, expand your professional skills, and create opportunities that may never have existed at home.
But one of the biggest lessons I've learned from working abroad is that success depends on more than enthusiasm and good intentions.
It depends on clarity.
This experience reinforced for me the importance of:
✔ Clear agreements
✔ Defined responsibilities
✔ Consistent communication
✔ Support structures
These are not "nice to have."
They are essential.
When expectations are clearly communicated, people know where they stand.
When responsibilities are defined, accountability becomes fair and transparent.
When communication is consistent, misunderstandings can be resolved before they become larger issues.
When support structures are in place, people can navigate challenges without feeling isolated or overwhelmed.
This is especially important for expatriate workers.
When you move to another country, you're often learning a new workplace, a new culture, different employment laws, healthcare systems, housing arrangements, and social networks—all at the same time.
Many expatriates assume things will become clear once they arrive.
Sometimes they do.
Sometimes they don't.
That's why preparation matters.
If you're considering working overseas, ask:
✔ What exactly is my role?
✔ Who is responsible for what?
✔ What decisions can I make independently?
✔ What happens if something goes wrong?
✔ Is there a clear complaints or grievance process?
✔ Who do I speak to if I have concerns?
✔ What support is available if I experience health, family, or personal challenges?
These questions aren't about mistrust.
They're about creating the foundations for success.
The strongest workplaces I've experienced are not the ones without problems.
They are the ones where expectations are understood, communication is open, and people know how concerns will be addressed when challenges arise.
Whether you're an employer, manager, business owner, or employee, it's worth asking:
💭 Are expectations clearly documented?
💭 Does everyone understand their role?
💭 Are concerns addressed promptly and respectfully?
💭 Do people know where to turn for support?
When these foundations are in place, trust grows.
And when trust grows, people thrive.
👉 Reflection:
Preparation protects you.
Clear agreements, defined responsibilities, consistent communication, and support structures are not optional extras. They are the foundation of healthy, sustainable workplaces and successful expatriate experiences.

I was employed to deliver client sessions.
Over time, I found myself held accountable for tasks outside my role, particularly scheduling and bookings. Expectations kept on shifting, often without prior notification. Shifting boundaries creates tension.
👉 Reflection:
Clear role boundaries are essential for both performance and wellbeing.

The Expat Reality
Working in a new country means stepping into unfamiliar systems. You rely on your employer for:
processes
expectations
structure
If these aren’t clearly defined, it can create confusion very quickly.
👉 Reflection:
Clarity at the beginning can prevent a lot of stress later.

Stop chasing clients.
Start building community.
That’s where real growth happens.
One of the biggest mistakes I see studio owners make is believing they need more marketing, more promotions, or more followers to grow their business.
But sustainable growth rarely comes from constantly chasing new clients.
It comes from creating a place where people feel:
✨ Welcome
✨ Valued
✨ Supported
✨ Connected
When people feel like they belong, they stay.
They tell their friends.
They become advocates for your studio.
They celebrate your successes and support you through challenges.
A thriving Pilates studio isn't built on transactions.
It's built on relationships.
Ask yourself:
💭 Do my clients know each other's names?
💭 Do they feel part of something bigger than an exercise class?
💭 Am I building a community or simply delivering sessions?
The most successful studios I've seen aren't necessarily the ones with the biggest marketing budgets.
They're the ones that create genuine connection.
Stop chasing clients.
Start building community.
That's where real growth happens.

✨ What do you want people to feel when they walk into your studio? ✨
Not what they do.
Not what they achieve.
But what they feel.
Because long after the exercises are finished… that feeling is what stays.
Is it…
🌿 A sense of calm after a busy day?
💛 Feeling seen, supported, and understood?
🧘♀️ Confidence in their body again?
🌸 A safe space where they can just be themselves?
As studio owners and teachers, we often focus on programming, technique, and results.
But the true magic lies in the experience we create.
👉 The way you greet someone
👉 The tone of your voice
👉 The energy in the room
👉 The culture you build
These are the things that shape how people feel.
And how people feel… determines whether they come back.
Take a moment today and ask yourself:
Does my studio reflect how I want people to feel?

From Heart to Purpose: The Story Behind My Pilates Studio and Book
When I first opened Hearts and Bones Pilates in 2002, my goal was simple: to create a business doing what I loved, teaching movement and helping people feel better in their bodies. After spending seven years working in other studios, observing what worked and what didn’t, I set out to build something of my own. A place with integrity. A place where people felt seen.
But what began as a personal pursuit quickly evolved into something much deeper.
As the studio grew and I became more confident running the business, I realised something important: having the right systems and tools wasn’t enough. What truly made the difference, what transformed my business into a thriving space of healing and growth, was leading with heart.
Every day, I witnessed transformation that went far beyond posture, a flatter tummy or pain relief. Clients who once came in anxious and reserved started to laugh, to engage, to light up the room. People who felt weak or invisible found strength, not just physical strength, but emotional resilience, renewed confidence, and a sense of belonging.
It wasn’t just the exercises. It was the community.
The more I focused on nurturing that community, and creating a safe, welcoming, purpose-driven space, the more the business flourished. And it didn’t stop at the studio walls. Together, my clients and I began reaching out to help others in the wider community.
We ran charity drives and art auctions, hosted donation-based workshops, and raised funds for organisations like Women’s Refuge and Days for Girls. We supported women facing violence in their homes and helped fight period poverty around the world. What started as a simple Pilates studio became a hub for connection, empowerment, and change.
This journey led me to write Pilates & Purpose, a book born from experience, trial and error, and the belief that a Pilates studio can be more than a business. It can be a place of transformation, for the owner, for the team, and for every client who walks through the door.
If you’re a teacher or studio owner who wants to build something meaningful, something that reflects your values and lifts others up along the way, this book is for you.
With purpose and heart,
Tania

“Your why is the compass of your business.”
When things feel unclear, overwhelming, or frustrating…
It’s often because you’ve drifted away from your “why.”
Your why:
- guides your decisions
- shapes your culture
- attracts the right clients
Without it, you’re just reacting. With it, you’re leading.
If you’re ready to build a Pilates studio that feels aligned,
sustainable, and meaningful…
Pilates & Purpose is your guide.
