Ever wondered what the difference is between a public access easement and a paper road? Here’s a simple way to tell them apart.👇

These two access terms get mixed up a lot, so here’s a simple breakdown:

A public access easement gives people a legal right to cross private land for access.

A paper road is a legal road that exists on the map, even if it has never been formed on the ground. It is still public road land.

So the main difference is:

👉Easement = access over private land.

What that means in the real world is that it can be closed for safety reasons by the owner. They are required to put up a sign saying that the easement is closed. If you see a sign up saying do not enter, DON"T , you’ll be trespassing⚠️

👉Paper road = public road, even if unformed.

What that means in the real world is that only the local roading authority can shut them down. In Nelson, for example, it’s the Nelson City Council. Again, signage must be displayed.

If you have a problem with the way a PAE (public access easement) is being closed, the best people to talk to are the landowners. Sometimes they genuinely don’t know the implications of the closures for public access, and in some cases they are not even the land managers. Failing that contact the Walking Access Commission

For paper roads, speak to the council. But just one more word on paper roads: sometimes these run directly through people’s property, and sometimes the landowners don’t even know about them. Don’t go waltzing through — have a bit of tact and go and have a yarn with them. Most landowners are pretty friendly and are happy to let you go through to access public land.😊

The burning question with the K500 is always… clockwise or anticlockwise? I totally get that if you’re doing the shorter route options, anticlockwise often comes out on top.

But if you’re going all in on the epic—taking in the Porika and Barrons Flat tracks—and want a predominantly tailwind, you’ll see why we think clockwise is the winner.

Either way, it doesn’t really matter which direction you go… the main thing is you get out there and experience one of New Zealand’s best backcountry bikepacking routes while the Heaphy track is open.
