THEN ➡️ NOW
A lot has changed...
But one thing hasn't: Matamata's love of community sport.
From the gyms that served generations of Matamata families to the new Open Country Community Stadium, this community has always understood the importance of having somewhere to come together.
Te Whare Hui Ora is the next chapter in that story. ❤️
Who remembers playing sport in the old gyms?

TE WHARE HUI ORA ❤️
You might know us as the Open Country Community Stadium.
But did you know our Stadium also has a Māori name?
Te Whare Hui Ora
Meaning “wellbeing through connection.”
The name reflects what we hope this building will be for our community — a place where people come together, get active, build relationships, support one another and create positive experiences.
Because this is about more than sport.
It's about people.
And that's what makes Te Whare Hui Ora a community facility.

🏟️ It takes a community to build a community facility.
Have you ever wondered who actually makes the Open Country Community Stadium happen?
The story starts with an idea.
The initial concept for the Stadium came from Bruce Magan and the Matamata Futures Trust, who worked to turn a vision for a new community sporting facility into something real.
And that collaboration continues today.
📱 Matamata Futures Trust continues to manage the Stadium’s social media and communications, helping share what’s happening, celebrate the people using the facility and keep our community connected with Te Whare Hui Ora.
🏢 Matamata-Piako District Council is responsible for the day-to-day operational running and management of the Stadium, ensuring the facility is well managed and available for the community.
🏫 Matamata College also plays an important role, managing their students who use the facility throughout the day for school activities.
And then there are the many funders, sponsors, clubs, schools, volunteers, sporting organisations and community members who have all played a part in bringing the Stadium to life.
No one organisation does it alone.
It’s about collaboration, shared vision and making the most of a facility that belongs to the whole community. ❤️
That’s what makes the Open Country Community Stadium special.
Built together. Managed together. Used by everyone.
