In celebrating the historic Open Championship win by Ryan Fox over the weekend we thought we’d share some history from the Masterton/Eketahuna Pro Am

Keen golfers may already remember this, but Ryan made his professional debut at the 2012 Masterton-Eketahuna pro am tournament. He shot a 65 at Eketahuna and a 64 at Masterton to finish second behind Grant Moorhead who shot 63 and 64.

Afterwards Ryan was quoted in the paper saying ‘We played Eketahuna first and they still had the fences up around the greens to keep the sheep off and I’ve gone ‘holy sh*t’, this is professional golf’, Also playing in that tournament was Ryan’s coach Marcus Wheelhouse who tied for 13th alongside one Shaun Hewitt!

He followed his fine start to the Pro Am circuit by winning the Jimmy Napier Classic at Martinborough a few days later.

This is Ryan receiving his first cheque as a professional golfer, I can’t remember how much it was but no doubt it was only a couple of hundred.

Rob shot a superb round of 1 under par to score 40 Stableford points, giving him a one point victory over Alan Kempsell with
Phil Rutene and David Cook a further point back in third place.

Course closed today, greens are completely under water and unplayable.

Unfortunately, one of our newly purchased practice mats has gone missing.

These things are quite heavy, so while we admire the commitment to improving your golf game, we'd really like it back.

As the photo shows, there's now a rather obvious gap in our practice area.

Our members make great use of the mats for warming up, working on their swing, and some even use them for a bit of speed training. It made for a slightly chaotic start to Saturday's BW O'Brien Club Day, with a sizeable queue forming as players patiently waited for a quick warm-up before heading out on course.

To make matters worse, our tees have also gone walkabout, leaving a few golfers attempting to hit driver off the deck with predictable results!

On the topic of game improvement, the club offers excellent coaching for golfers of all levels through Joel Macklin Golf Professional, while Shaun and Joel at All Teed Up Pro Shop can help with anything golf-related to improve your game.

We'd strongly recommend getting in touch with them rather than hitting balls off a practice mat in your backyard.

100th Trust House Wairarapa Open Recap

Congratulations to Phil Tuoro for winning this years Mens Wairarapa Open and defending his title. Phils final round of 65,which included an eagle on the 18th, gave him a two shot victory over Owen Lloyd.

Elise Barber won the Rowntree/Hopkirk Trophy in the womens division with an amazing display of golf finishing on 16 under par around the par 73 yellow tee course!

Hamish Finlayson took out on the Intermediate division by one shot over fellow local member and Mens Club Captain Matt Sale.

Saturday Draw - 100th Trust House Wairarapa Open ⛳️

Fantastic to see such a strong field this year for the 100th Trust House Wairarapa Open, with players from all over the country joining us to celebrate including a number of past members.

The Men’s Senior Division is looking extremely competitive, with 13 players on plus handicaps. We’re fortunate to have past champions Bruce Middlemiss, Perry Hayman, Jeff Tuoro, Jonno Cane, Kerry Mountcastle (pro), Dean Gray, Sam Forrester, and defending champion Phil Tuoro in the field, alongside a host of other contenders capable of taking out this year’s title.

It’s awesome to have Kerry Mountcastle joining us this weekend. While he’s not eligible to win the Wairarapa Open, we’re stoked to have him join the field and playing alongside three junior golfers.

The Women’s Division, playing for the Hopkirk/Rowntree Trophy, features a high-class field led by Elise Barber (+2.7) , while the Intermediate Division is set to be as competitive as ever with a host of chances.

Unfortunately, as previosly mentioned, Bob Charles won’t be joining the field on Saturday afternoon due to injury, but he will still be out supporting alongside Murray Macklin.

We’re looking forward to a great weekend of golf and encourage everyone to come out and support the players.

Carrying on our look at past Wairarapa Open champions, we move on to six-time winner Bruce Middlemiss , who we’re stoked to have joining us this weekend.

Bruce won his first Wairarapa Open in 1979, with wins following in 1986, 1987, 1994, 1996 (tied with Phil Aickin) and 2001. The fact he won across four decades speaks to the quality and versatility of his game.

He was a regular for Masterton Duncan Cup teams, as well as Wairarapa and Wellington rep teams, through the late 70s, 80s and early 90s before moving on to Rangitikei Golf Club, and now Napier Golf Club. From our understanding, he has claimed seven club championships up there an he no doubt picked up a couple at Rangitikei as well!

Bruce has five Masterton club championships to his name and held the course record for many years with a 64, set back in 1984.

It’s great to celebrate and acknowledge players like Bruce and even better to have him in the field this weekend, joining fellow Hawke’s Bay residents and past winners and members Dean Gray and Jeff Tuoro.

Entries close tonight and this weekends draw will be emailed out to players and posted on Facebook tomorrow.
