This term we were lucky enough to have our first International Guest Teacher from Melbourne 😱🇦🇺
Last week we were blessed enough to learn from him and a taste of Waacking 🕺🏼
Thank you for teaching us via Zoom! (Due to COVID we couldn’t have him over 😔) nonetheless it was still awesome!
Andy Kuramoto 🇦🇺 is a dancer, community leader and event curator interested in the intersection of street dance and culture, youth empowerment and social engagement. He began in 2005 where he began his journey in dance. 🔥
Andy started with a particular street dance style called "Waacking" which is a q***r style of dance that originated in Los Angeles during the 1970s 🇺🇸 and has now taken off to a larger audience all over the world within the last decade. Waacking has been heavily incorporated into a part of the street dance community and Andy has been the founder of the Waacking community in Melbourne. Being a dancer and advocate for this style, over the many years Andy has been able to share his love for the dance through teaching and judging on a domestic and international level and further push the exposure for the dance through conducting research, meeting prime individuals and conducting and organizing workshops in Australia. 📋
Having learnt through numerous experiences of organizing small events and workshops lead Andy to begin on his journey of working on larger scale events. The aim was to further push for exposure of street dance culture towards the public, ranging from organizing events such as "Cross Styles" - a 600 person held attend dance battle event held in conjunction with Section 8 and Brooklyn Brewery to being an artist liaison manager/host for Lunar New Year Disco - a 1200 person attending Waacking battle held at Melbourne Museum as part of the Midsumma Festival. 🏆
