The Monday volunteers found a warm spot in the brisk winter ❄️ morning 🌄 to have a cuppa ☕️. Only 5 weeks until peeling day!

Naval Point Club Newsletter - 1st August 2026 Thank you to everyone who came along to our Prize Giving and AGM. It was good to see the clubhouse full and to close out the season the way it deserves.

🦭 **Kia ora, new member alert at Naval Point Club!**

We've got an uninvited guest hauled out on the floater — a leopard seal who's decided club life suits him. He hasn't paid his subs, and he's already flouting the rules, ignoring every "no fishing" sign in sight. DOC has been notified and is keeping an eye on him.

As tempting as it is to get close for a photo, please keep your distance — these are wild predators of the moana, not the cuddly kind:

**Size & power**
Leopard seals can reach 3–3.5m and 300–600kg, with a strong bite and surprising speed both in water and on land.
**Apex predator**
They eat penguins, fish, squid, and other seals — powerful jaws and sharp teeth built for hunting, not petting.
**Unpredictable on land**
They may look sluggish, but they can lunge quickly if they feel threatened or cornered.
**Rare but real risk to humans**
Attacks are uncommon, but there have been serious incidents, including a fatal one in Antarctica in 2003.
**Protected species**
In NZ, it's illegal to harass or disturb them — admire from a safe distance (DOC recommends at least 20m).
**Dogs must be on lead**
🐕‍🦺 — curious or barking dogs can provoke a defensive lunge, so please keep your four-legged friends leashed and well away from the floater at all times.

Let's manaaki this rare visitor with respect — enjoy the novelty, keep your distance, keep dogs on lead, and let him rest in peace! 🐧🚫
