I so often hear people talk about hormone treatments like they should be the last option rather than one of the first treatments to consider.
But if symptoms are being caused by low or fluctuating levels of estradiol, progesterone or testosterone, it makes no sense to ignore the underlying cause and just treating the individual symptoms instead.
Too many women spend years having multiple appointments and being prescribed different medications for anxiety, poor sleep, low mood, palpitations, migraines or joint pains, without any clinician asking whether their hormones could be contributing to their symptoms and prescribing hormone treatments to replace the missing hormones.
Women’s healthcare deserves the same principles as the rest of medicine: understand the underlying cause, discuss all appropriate treatment options, and make decisions together based on the best available evidence and the individual sitting in front of you.

Why is there so much fear-mongering about the potential risks of hormone treatments, yet so little discussion about the very real risks of not being prescribed hormone treatments?
Low hormone levels adversely affect every cell, tissue and organ in the body, increasing the risk of osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, dementia, cancers, auto-immune diseases, Parkinson’s disease, motor neurone disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and an early death, while also impacting day-to-day quality of life due the numerous symptoms.
Yet too many women are still denied body identical hormone treatment because of outdated misconceptions rather than current evidence. Natural, bioidentical hormones are the same structure as our own hormones so are not associated with risks, unlike synthetic “hormones” in all contraceptives and in older types of HRT.
It’s time we changed the conversation and talked more about the risks to women who are not prescribed hormone treatments.
