Don’t knock a fur seal for having a 😴
These majestic sleeping beauties are semi nocturnal and will interchange 2 week foraging trips at sea with periods of 4-5 days on land (or close to shore). This incredible cycle means they need to get quality rest, so we ensure you get the best seat in the house without disturbing the animals whilst letting water interactions be on their terms 🦭

We encountered this emaciated Southern giant petrel (white morph ) last week at our launch site. Not the best circumstances to see one of these for the first time but incredible bird none the less. So pleased it’s getting all the care it deserves now!

Recently we were reminded of the incredible environment we get to guide in! We were alerted by a friend fishing off the beach of a giant squid that washed ashore nearby. We raced down to check it out and we’re mind blown at the alien like beast that lay before us 🦑
The Kaikōura canyon constantly reminds us of its biodiversity, and these s***m whale wrestling beauties are a sight to behold!

Did you know that Kaikōura is the seabird capital of the world 🗺️
Some of the stars of the show out on the Moana end up being the incredible seabirds that we encounter.
Pictured the Northern giant petrel (Pāngurunguru) is the size of smaller albatross but a very aggressive feeder getting the nickname “vultures of the sea”. There are only roughly 10,000 of these birds worldwide with around 2750 breeding in New Zealand waters 🦅
