Global Online Gathering for Pacific Indigenous Women’s Forum

The online event, He Muka Tangata - He Mana Wāhine is for indigenous women to discuss critical issues for the Pacific on 13 May 2024, 12-4pm NZST, ahead of the 13th Festival of Pacific Arts and Culture (FestPAC) in Hawai’i.

Kaitiakitanga is a core principle of ours. In our line of mahi, we foster tuakana-teina relationships to ensure we grow and strengthen the next generation of Māori working in and with the public service. Teina Tix are a Kai Whai Hua initiative in which businesses sponsor tickets, giving our next generation the chance to attend Kai Whai Hua at no cost.

This Kai Whai Hua five Teina Tix are funded by DTK Associates. This pakihi is led by internationally experienced former senior public servant, Deb Te Kawa. We also had Hinerangi Edwards from Aatea gift two Teina Tix for the night, so we have seven teina total coming along.

We are pleased to share that our Director and Co-Founder, Hinerangi Edwards, has been made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for her services to Māori in governance and education.

Hinerangi accepts this Honour on behalf of those who came before her: her late-father Ray (Karoro Moetahuna) Edwards: Pāpā, Koro, farmer, committee member, musician, and champion of his community, who spent 50 years diligently serving in unpaid governance roles; her late-mother Rauna Edwards (née Harrison): Māmā, Kuia, nurse, educator; her late-mother-in-law Miriama Teokiekie Hammond (née Cooper), Māmā, Kuia, educator, discerning putiputi judge; the late New Amsterdam (‘Amster’) Reedy, tohunga, pou tikanga, advisor, Olympic Games kaumātua; and her many Taranaki pāheke (past) including Huirangi Waikerepuru, Amira Rangi, Te Miringa Hohaia, Te Rū Wharehoka, Whero Bailey, (and present) Henare Ngaia, Josie Bigham, Turi Ngātai, and far too many more to name here.

Ray, Miriama, and Amster in particular were founding pou of Tai Ki Tai - AATEA Pākeke Advisory Group, and were pivotal influences in Hinerangi’s journey, imparting not only their life experiences and mātauranga but also their humour, discernment, and uncompromising passion for our culture and people. In turn, each of them have greatly impacted the journey of the AATEA whānau.

Hinerangi, thank you for your relentless dedication to the future of our people. Your application of the “What else is possible?” philosophy inspires and constantly keeps us on our toes. It is an honour to work with you in the pursuit of opportunities that benefit our people and the future of our tamariki.

E tū tama wahine i te wā o te kore. (In times of need it is women who lead, and the need is constant.)
