The Case for the Credit Card Ride — the ultimate way to explore NZ (and beyond!)

There’s always a moment on a multi-day ride where you realise you’ve packed too much…

Too many “just in case” layers.
Too much food.
Too much weight.

Enter the "CREDIT CARD RIDE".

No tent. No sleeping bag. No overthinking. Just your bike, a loose plan, and the confidence that a good coffee, a cold beer, and a comfy bed are waiting somewhere down the trail.

So what exactly is a Credit Card Ride?

It’s bikepacking or cycle touring without carrying all the camping gear. Instead of loading up with everything you need, you rely on the places you ride through for accommodation, food, and the essentials.

Think:
✅ Lightweight setup
✅ Motels, B&Bs, country pubs or cabins
✅ Cafés, bakeries, wineries and local spots for meals
✅ More riding, less carrying

It’s the lighter, more accessible side of bikepacking — but you still get that feeling of escaping into the outdoors and ticking off a proper multi-day adventure.

NZ is made for this style of riding. From the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail to the Timber Trail, Queen Charlotte Track and countless routes you can create yourself — the options are endless.

What to take:
✔ Good riding kit (plus one off-bike outfit)
✔ Lightweight layers
✔ Basic tools and repair kit
✔ Phone, charger and navigation
✔ Small frame bag, seat bag or backpack for essentials, snacks and water

What to leave behind:
❌ Tent
❌ Sleeping bag
❌ Cooking gear
❌ “Just in case” items that never get used

The golden rule:
If you can buy it, rent it, or do without it — don’t carry it.

A weekend loop or 3-day mission is a great way to start. Plan your stops, keep the route interesting, and let the adventure unfold.

Gravel bikes have really opened the door for these rides too — longer days of 60–80km+ are very achievable, with more options to explore quieter roads and trails.

The real skill in a Credit Card Ride is knowing what not to bring.

Keep it light. Ride further. Enjoy the journey.

Thinking about giving one a go? Have a look at some routes, then pop into Revolution Bikes and we’ll help get your bike setup right — because the right setup makes all the difference.
