Human performance is rarely built in the big moment.

It is built in the small ones.

The breath before the decision.
Noticing what your body is telling you.
Beginning before motivation arrives.
Practising one response until it becomes familiar.
Simplifying when pressure rises.
Recovering without guilt.
Rehearsing the moment before you enter it.

None of these things look particularly impressive from the outside.

But when pressure arrives, we rarely rise to some completely new version of ourselves.

We reach for what we have practised.

That is why Stoic Code Combat is not simply about learning how to fight.

It is about learning how you operate.

How you recognise pressure.
How you regulate it.
How you make decisions inside it.
And how, through deliberate practice, you become increasingly capable of choosing your response.

You cannot control what happens next.

You can train what happens in you.

FOR THREE YEARS, ARISTOTLE TAUGHT ONE CHILD.

Not a classroom.

Not a programme of hundreds.

One young man.

His name was Alexander.

History would later call him Alexander the Great — but before the campaigns, the leadership and the legend, there was a period of deliberate mentorship.

A teacher sitting with a young person.

Questioning him.
Challenging him.
Teaching him how to think — not simply what to think.

That matters to me.

Because somewhere along the way, we started believing impact had to be measured by how many people we could put in a room.

I believe there is still enormous value in one-to-one mentorship.

🥊 One coach.
🧠 One young person.
🫁 Learning to breathe under pressure.
⚖️ Learning to recognise challenge rather than immediately respond with fear.
🧭 Learning who they are, what they value, and how they choose to act.

That is part of the philosophy behind Stoic Code Combat.

We don’t need every rangatahi to become a fighter.

We want them to become capable of meeting the fight when life inevitably brings one.

Sometimes meaningful change doesn’t begin with a crowd.

Sometimes it begins with one young person, one mentor, and enough time to truly listen.

🏆 MOST DEDICATED — BENJI 🏆

At the end of the rugby season over the weekend, Benji was awarded Most Dedicated. 🏉❤️

And this one carries a bit of weight.

31 years ago, his Dad received the same award.

Different generation.
Same recognition.
Father and son. 🏆❤️

I’ve had the privilege of working alongside Benji since 2024, and I’ve watched this young man grow — not just as an athlete, but as a person.

He puts himself forward. He works through disappointment. He asks questions, listens, learns and keeps showing up.

That’s why MOST DEDICATED feels right.

Dedication isn’t about being the best every weekend.

It’s about caring enough to keep turning up.

🥊 Keep learning.
🏉 Keep putting your hand up.
🧠 Keep growing.
🤝 Keep contributing to those around you.

And this photo means something too.

Standing beside Benji are Nanny Glenda and Poppa Nigel. ❤️

When our whānau moved back from Thailand, Nanny G and Poppa welcomed us. They stayed connected, and over time community became whānau.

I think there’s something pretty special about Benji standing between them holding this award.

Young people don’t grow alone.

Sometimes whakapapa connects us.
Sometimes life does.
And sometimes people simply keep showing up for one another until community becomes whānau. ❤️🤝

I’m incredibly proud of you, Benji.

You’ve got so much growing still ahead of you — and that’s the exciting part.

31 years apart.
Father and son.
Same award.
MOST DEDICATED. 🏆

🥊 Benji is my fighter.

I believe in this young man wholeheartedly.

Well done mate. Enjoy this one — you earned it. ❤️

⚔️ THE FORGE IS NOT THE SWORD. ⚔️

Not everyone needs to know the forge.

But everyone will eventually feel the blade. 🔥

Knowledge is gathered quietly.
Tested carefully.
Refined through experience.
Expressed simply. 🧠⚒️

What you see is the practice.

What you don’t see are the years of experience, study, mistakes, reflection and refinement that determine why the practice looks the way it does.

That part stays in the forge. 🔒

Because the purpose isn’t to impress a young person with complexity.

The purpose is to take complexity and turn it into something they can feel, recognise, measure and act upon. 👁️🧠⚖️✊

Different drills.
Different demands.
One developing system.

And eventually, they walk through the doors. 🚪🌅

I cannot control what waits for them outside.

I cannot remove every challenge.

I cannot fight every battle for them.

My responsibility is to prepare them so that when pressure arrives, they have something within themselves to call upon. 🥊🛡️

I build them here.
The world will test them.
They walk out anyway.

That is the work.

🔥 PREPARE THE MIND.
⚒️ CONDITION THE BODY.
⚔️ MASTER THE RESPONSE.

🏛️ IT ALL LEADS TO ONE ROAD. 🐙

Different drills.
Different demands.
One developing system.
One road. ⚡️

🎾 Racket & ball work — distance, perception and attention.

✊ Rice work — hand conditioning, grip, wrist stability and proprioceptive awareness.

👣 Incline work — balance, posture, core engagement and movement under constraint.

🏛️ Strong & deliberate — slow it down. Build position, structure and control.

⚡️ Light & fast — speed, rhythm and reaction. Relax. Move efficiently. Apply under pressure.

None of these drills exist in isolation.

This is EXPLICIT PRACTICE through a HUMAN PERFORMANCE lens. 🧠

Creating environments where the athlete learns to:

👁️ FEEL
🧠 RECOGNISE
⚖️ MEASURE
✊ ACT

We slow things down so the nervous system has an opportunity to organise the movement.

We change the demand so the athlete learns to adapt.

We repeat with purpose so conscious action can gradually become reliable response.

🔁 REPEAT. REFINE. EVOLVE.

The goal isn’t simply to teach someone how to throw a better punch. 🥊

It is to develop neural pathways, procedural memory, perception, decision-making and the ability to organise the BODY and MIND as the environment changes.

Because eventually the drill disappears.

What remains is the person — and their ability to perceive, decide and respond. 🧠⚡️

IT ALL LEADS TO ONE ROAD. 🥊🧠

This is Stoic Code Combat.

Nothing here is random.

The rice conditions the hands. ✊
The racket and ball develop distance, perception and attention. 🎾
The slight incline changes the demand on balance, footwork and core organisation. 🦶
The hands are strong and deliberate when we’re building structure.
Then light and fast when we’re developing speed, rhythm and response. ⚡

Each drill has a purpose.

Each movement builds on another.

Each exposure gives the brain and body another opportunity to recognise, organise and respond.

This is Explicit Practice.

Not simply showing a young person what to do and asking them to repeat it.

We’re developing the foundations beneath the skill — perception, attention, coordination, timing, balance, movement and control — then deliberately connecting them.

Feel. Recognise. Measure. Act.

We aren’t chasing exhaustion.

We’re building neural pathways.
We’re developing procedural memory.
We’re creating movement that can eventually happen without conscious thought.

Strong and deliberate.
Light and fast.

Different drills.
Different demands.
One developing system.
One road.

This is coaching through a Human Performance lens.

This is Explicit Practice.

🥊 FRIDAY | STOIC CODE COMBAT

💊 What do you take — and why?

Protein. Creatine. Electrolytes. Magnesium. Vitamins. Minerals. Greens.

Supplementation has become a normal part of training and wellbeing.

But there’s a more important question than what is in your cupboard:

What are you actually trying to support?

Was a deficiency identified through blood work or another measurement?

Was supplementation recommended by a doctor, dietitian or other qualified practitioner?

Or have you developed an understanding of your own body — recognising patterns in your training, recovery, nutrition and how you feel?

There can be value in all of those conversations.

But self-awareness isn’t the same as measurement, and measurement doesn’t remove the value of knowing your own body.

Sometimes the responsible approach is both:

🧠 Know your body.
📊 Measure what can be measured.
👩‍⚕️ Seek professional guidance when it’s needed.
🔄 Review rather than simply adding more.

Stoic practice asks us to examine our choices rather than simply follow the crowd.

So this Friday’s question is:

What do you take?

And more importantly…

How did you decide you needed it?
