Kahutia Bowling Club officially opened its 2026–2027 season on Saturday, 29 August, with a great turnout of members and supporters despite the occasional spell of light rain.

The afternoon began with the traditional first bowl of the season, delivered by Tony Dobson. Tony was also honoured by the club for his valued contribution and the many ways he has supported Kahutia Bowling Club through his hard work and willingness to help with various projects and jobs around the club. His contribution is greatly appreciated by the members.

The opening day saw four rinks and 24 players (eight teams) competing in a Triples format, while other club members also came along to support and enjoy the day.

With good music playing in the background, there was a fantastic atmosphere on the green as everyone settled into three rounds of eight-end games.

Despite the weather, the smiles, laughter and friendly competition continued throughout the afternoon, with everyone making the most of the first day back on the greens.

After the bowls, members enjoyed a shared afternoon tea, with plenty of food, cold drinks and good conversation. It was a great opportunity for everyone to relax, socialise and catch up with fellow club members.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along, participated, supported, helped out and contributed to making the opening day such an enjoyable occasion.

It was a fantastic way to kick off another season at Kahutia Bowling Club.

The Gisborne Under 26 team produced another impressive display of skill, determination and perseverance against North Harbour Under 26, with several exciting and closely fought ends highlighting the quality of bowls played throughout the match.

There were several outstanding moments on the rink. At one end, North Harbour’s red bowl was holding shot, but Zoe Beck produced an excellent bowl, moving the jack and going with it to take the shot.

At another end, Kyle Pinn drew beautifully close to the jack to win the end, with the scoreboard moving to Gisborne 9 – 6 North Harbour.

Zoe showed her confidence again on another end, delivering a superb bowl to move the jack and take the shot away from North Harbour.

The game was extremely close, with the scoreboard showing Gisborne 12 – 11 North Harbour at one stage. Gisborne was holding shot when North Harbour’s skip delivered a telling bowl to take the shot away.

With Gisborne holding the second shot, Kyle Pinn attempted to draw around the shot bowl and take the end, but his bowl just came short.

The Gisborne triples showed great effort and perseverance throughout the contest. Despite their determination and some excellent heads, they narrowly went down 13–12 to North Harbour.

The pairs provided another highly competitive contest, with Malachi-Moses Gray and Liam Pinn battling hard against North Harbour.

At one stage, North Harbour was holding two shots, but Liam Pinn produced an excellent draw close to the jack to win the end, keeping Gisborne in the contest.

The game continued to go down to the wire, with the scoreboard reaching Gisborne 12 – 13 North Harbour.

In one particularly dramatic end, Liam drew his bowl next to the jack. North Harbour’s Liam Staines then drove the shot bowl out, leaving North Harbour holding four shots on the head. With Malachi-Moses’ bowl sitting near the ditch, Liam Pinn attempted to move the jack into the ditch. He just missed the jack, but managed to remove three of North Harbour’s shots.

It was another example of the determination and never-give-up attitude shown by the Gisborne team. Despite their efforts, the pairs ultimately finished 14–12 in favour of North Harbour.

Gisborne finished third in Section 1 with 9 points and a +25 differential, an excellent result against some strong Under 26 teams.

The final Section 1 standings were:

1. Wellington – 21 points, +80 differential
2. Canterbury – 18 points, +54 differential
3. Gisborne – 9 points, +25 differential
4. North Harbour – 9 points, -50 differential
5. Wairarapa – 3 points, -109 differential

Although Gisborne narrowly missed out in several of the individual disciplines against North Harbour, the team continued to show skill, composure, perseverance and plenty of fight throughout the tournament.

The performances from the young Gisborne bowlers are a great indication of the talent developing within the region. They can be proud of the way they competed, particularly against strong opposition, and of the way they continued to battle right to the final bowl.

A great effort from the Gisborne Under 26 team — plenty of talent to be proud of.
