Kia ora Y whānau! 👋 We’re excited to be working alongside Gisborne District Council and Trust Tairāwhiti to explore opportunities for the proposed new indoor multipurpose centre at our Childers Road location, extending across to Victoria Domain.

The Y Gisborne CEO Michelle Duley says it’s an exciting opportunity for our community.

“We want our Y whānau to be part of this journey and will be keen to hear from our staff, members and supporters as the project takes shape.”

We’ll keep you updated as the project develops and Gisborne District Council's Long Term Plan Vibe Check is a great way to do this at this stage. ❤️

On Tuesday mornings here at The Y, something pretty special happens — our Heart Health community class.

Every week, rain or shine, up to 80 people come together to get moving, stay active and enjoy each other’s company — with plenty of smiles and wairua in abundance.

It’s quite a sight. Friendships are at the heart of the class, along with plenty of laughter, energy and an unmistakable zest for life.

For long-time participant Bob Woods, the class has been part of his life for about 6 years

“I honestly don’t think I’d be here today if it wasn’t for these classes,” Bob says. “It keeps me active, but it’s more than that. It’s the people, the friendships and having somewhere to come every week. It’s a big part of my life.”

Personal Trainer and Heart Health instructor Wendy Worters says the class has grown to become a much-loved fixture on the weekly calendar.

"What I love is that people come for all sorts of reasons — some for the health and fitness, others just for the social side and an excuse to get out of the house and be active.

“Whatever it is that brings them, they keep showing up, and that's what's turned this into such a special part of our week."

Heart Health is one of The Y’s Community Classes, which are offered free or by koha to help make staying active and connected accessible to everyone.

These classes are made possible through the support of people who choose The Y — whether that’s through a Y Fitness membership, enrolling their tamariki at one of our early learning centres, or using one of our other services.

So when you choose The Y, you’re doing more than supporting your own health or whānau — you’re helping create opportunities for our whole community to belong, connect and thrive.

It was all go today here at the Y as hundreds of local tamariki came to meet and train with NBA basketball star Steven Adams from the Houston Rockets, who incredibly puts in so much time with local communities during his off season. 🔥🔥🔥

The YMCA Gisborne is proud to be part of the team who brings these events to the region with partners like Steven Adams Camps, Turanga Health, Whiti Ora Tairāwhiti and others.

Everyone's fitness journey starts somewhere. At the Y, we believe everyone deserves to feel welcome, supported and confident when they walk through our doors.

That's why our team of personal trainers is here to help you find your feet. Whether you're new to the gym, returning after a break, or working towards a personal goal, we'll create a programme that's right for you and support you with regular check-ins along the way.

Meet Joe Tangira – one of our qualified personal trainers. An absolute sportsman, Joe has proudly followed in his parents' footsteps as a personal trainer. You'll usually find him helping members in the early mornings before fitting in his own training later in the day.

For Joe, it's not just about exercise. It's about helping people build confidence, improve their wellbeing and become the best version of themselves.

If you're thinking about joining the Y, come and have a chat with Joe or one of the team about the right plan for you.

A place to belong. A place to grow. A place to thrive. That's Y. 💙
