Every year we have our great August Shuffle Up!

This year, it’s less about moving people up to a more challenging class and more about revising and shuffling the timetable so it better meets the needs of our dancers.

Based on the feedback from our recent survey—and taking into account my own planning, learning and admin needs—this is the working timetable I’ve come up with so far.

More details and full class outlines will follow soon.

WHAT IS SHUFFLE?

You may have seen the videos in your feed.

Shuffle is a freestyle dance made up of different footwork patterns. Two of the main ones are the Running Man and the T-step. Once you’ve got those basics, you can add kicks, turns and other moves—and start piecing them together in your own way.

It’s great cardio, brilliant for coordination and rhythm, and a fun new skill to add to your dance toolbox.

Then come back that evening for BACK TO THE DANCEFLOOR—our ’90s, 2000s and Party Rock dress-up dance party at Unity Theatre.

Workshop dancers will also have the chance to put their new moves together in a special group shuffle video at the party. It’s completely optional—but heaps of fun!

This is a fundraiser to support Julie and Jaeda on their road to the Hip Hop Unite World Championships in Tauranga this October.

With a heavy heart I’m sharing this post so that we can pay tribute to an inspirational woman 💔

Global icon and humanitarian, Dolly Parton, known to the world as a beloved singer, songwriter, philanthropist, actress, playwright, and author died peacefully today in Nashville, Tennessee. She was 80 years old.

Dolly is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 59 years Carl Thomas Dean (1942 – 2025), her mother Avie Lee Caroline Owens (1923 – 2003), and father, Robert Lee Parton, Sr. (1921 – 2000).

A rhinestone life that shone bright enough for the world to see, Dolly will forever stand as an inspiration not only through her timeless music and prolific songwriting, but also her wit, warmth, and kindness that made us all feel like family. Dolly Parton’s legacy is one of love, compassion, and resilience. With a seven-decade career, she inspired multiple generations of artists and fans with her music and an unwavering commitment to making the world a better place. Her songs will continue to resonate with people of all ages, and her philanthropic work will have a lasting impact.

At Dolly’s request, a small, private service will be held for immediate family. Dolly’s fans and friends from around the world are encouraged to pay tribute to Dolly on social media by tagging or by leaving a message at www.dollyparton.com

In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations to be made to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library at www.imaginationlibrary.com

Take this opportunity to learn a new dance skill!

SHUFFLE WORKSHOP | 2:00–3:30 PM
Join Julie Walker & Jaeda Mapu for a fun and supportive workshop learning the foundations of shuffle. Learn the basic steps and how to piece them together, giving you the skills to start finding your own flow.

Then we turn up the music for our Shuffle for the Auntie$ Dance Party that evening.
Expect a mix of line dancing, a little Y2K energy, plenty of chances to try your new shuffle moves and the opportunity to take part in our Shuffle for the Auntie$ video.

It’s all part of a fundraiser supporting Julie & Jaeda as they head away to compete at the Worlds.

AN EXCITING NEW CHAPTER FOR RnL
After our recent trip to Christchurch, and with more of our dancers attending socials, workshops and events throughout the motu, I’ve made it a goal to bring more of the Improver and Advanced dances being danced nationally into our club repertoire.

We want our dancers to head away to events feeling confident, recognising more dances on the lists and being able to get out there and join in.

And that has created a really exciting opportunity within our own club.
Going forward, Pauline Gilroy will be teaching our Wednesday night Improver
class.

Throughout 2026, Pauline has been developing her teaching skills, delivering line dancing classes in Elgin for Tūranga Health. She’s gained some great experience leading her own classes and is more than ready to step into a teaching space here at Rhythm n’ Lines.
After almost five years of being the sole teacher at RnL, I’m really looking forward to planning classes alongside Pauline and seeing her bring some of the great Improver and Advanced dances that grace dance lists at clubs and events around New Zealand to our Wednesday night floor.

Pauline already brings so much to RnL through her love of dance and choreography, and having another teacher gives us the opportunity to broaden what we offer while continuing to grow our dancers.

And what about Neon Monday?
Neon isn’t changing.
We’ll still be discovering exciting new dances from around the world together, particularly those that reflect Rhythm n’ Lines and the style of dancing we love.

So we’ll have two slightly different opportunities to keep progressing: Wednesday Improvers with Pauline, building our repertoire of dances being enjoyed around New Zealand and keeping your old favorites on rotation, and Neon Monday, continuing to explore the fresh, different and exciting dances we love at RnL.

After nearly five years, having another RnL teacher stepping onto the floor feels like a prettyexciting milestone for our club.
