Central Otago Womens Rugby doesn't usually qualify for a review on this page for obvious reasons. Although being from Central Otago myself I would love to include them in our family and give them a shout out after what I witnessed yesterday.

We turned up just before kickoff in the Otago Division Two Women's final between Central Otago and Alhambra-Union. My limited knowledge of the Div 2 competition is that these two sides were by far and away the strongest two sides in their four team competition. Looking at the scores from previous rounds it looked like whoever was at home won the match which makes the result extra special I am sure.

Looking back, I am super stoked we turned up early because the match was one of the most physical and hard-fought rugby encounters I have had the pleasure to watch this season. Central Otago won the match 31-17 in a match that looked closer at times than the score suggested. Both forward packs carried heavily into contact with defenders flying everywhere. The match was won by the small moments of brilliance and two players in the Central Otago backline stood out for me. Firstly, fullback Zoe Summers looked dangerous every time she had the ball. Zoe found space in the smallest of gaps and once she hit open pasture there was no stopping her. She scored a hat trick of tries and looked good at both fullback and halfback later in the match. Another who was outstanding was first five Hayley Harris. Hayley showed her ability at Topp Cup day in Balclutha but in this match she controlled the play extremely well. She tackled strongly all match and led by example, looking at the celebrations it seems like she led them pretty well too! The forward pack was led well by Tia Clark and the hard running Ilisabeta Vukialau. I can't say it enough but there were some EARTH SHATTERING HITS in this match. Alhambra-Union were good, but couldn't match the intensity brought by the Central sisters who more than deserved their second Div 2 banner in a row.

Surely we see you in Div 1 next season at Swamp Hen Park in Owaka..
