Does your neck feel strained when exercising on your back? Give this a try.

If your upper back has a more pronounced curve, or you naturally carry your head a little further forward, you might find that when you lie on your back, your head doesn’t comfortably reach the floor.

You might end up with your chin tipped towards the ceiling, your neck working hard to hold your head there, and sometimes even your lower back joining in to compensate.

Rather than forcing your head down, try placing a small amount of support underneath the back of your head.
This allows your head to come into a more neutral position, with your chin gently dropping and your head better aligned with your spine.

This isn’t just about making your neck more comfortable.
When your head is better positioned, it can make it easier to organise the rest of your body too: ribs, spine, pelvis and your deep core.

Think about the connection from the roof of your mouth, through your trunk, to your pelvic floor. If you’re starting an exercise with your head hanging back in extension, that whole relationship can be harder to organise.
A little support under your head can give you a much better starting position, so you can focus on the movement rather than fighting your own posture.

You might find this little tweak just allows you to find a position where you can breathe, connect and move with more ease.

Emmylou shares her experience of Barre Base ❤️

- What surprised you most when you first joined Barre Base?

“Rosa and the team give such great movement cues it feels like they’re reading my mind! But the attention to detail in terms of specific muscles, layers of the core and passage of nerves really spoke to the anatomy student in me.”

- What classes are you most drawn to at the studio?

“While Mat Pilates will always be a fav, I feel like the flow of the Gentle Barre class gives me unmatched muscle engagement and much needed stretches.”

- Do you have a favourite exercise or movement, or one you love to hate?

“Definitely love to hate hip circumduction’s on forearms – pretty epic core engagement but will always leave me sweating!”

- Have you noticed any changes in your body, mindset, or daily life since practising at Barre Base?

“I feel physically a lot stronger and better equipped for spontaneous adventures. Barre gives me a great foundation of strength and stability that helps me with whatever adventure I do next.”

- Is there anything that’s kept you coming back, even on the days you didn’t feel like moving?

“On the days I don’t feel like moving, I know all I have to do is get myself in the door and then I have an hour without having to make decisions. I know my day is better when I start it with barre, I feel more connected to my breath and carry a sense of momentum after a class. Also the playlists are full of bangers.”

- What would you say to someone who is thinking about trying Barre Base for the first time?

“Don’t feel like you have to take all the movement progressions, often the simpler options give me the best workout!”

Strength vs Pilates? I’m a bit over this “debate.”

If you know our ethos, you know we genuinely love strength training.

I personally lift weights at home 2x a week alongside yoga, Pilates & barre, and we even have two strength programmes on our online platform Barre Base Anywhere

In my opinion, I want both.

Pilates & strength training each offer something different, and together they create resilient, capable bodies.

Pilates, barre & mindful movement teach us how to move well. They improve posture, body awareness, balance and coordination, while strengthening the muscles that support our joints. Before adding lots of external load, there’s huge value in learning how to squat, hinge, lunge, push and pull with good alignment & control.

And remember, bodyweight exercise is strength training. For many people, mastering your own bodyweight is challenging enough. It builds strength, challenges bone, develops control, and lays a brilliant foundation. Adding external weights is simply one way to continue progressing that challenge as your body adapts.

Strength training with weights then offers another layer. It allows us to progressively overload our muscles & bones, helping us continue building strength, muscle mass and resilience in ways that can be harder to achieve with bodyweight exercise alone.

Then there’s mobility.

Being strong without enough mobility can leave you feeling restricted. Being flexible without enough strength can leave your joints feeling unsupported. We need both. The goal isn’t to be the strongest or the most flexible. It’s to be strong throughout the range of motion you have.

And let’s not forget the nervous system.
Pilates, barre and yoga invite us to slow down, breathe and move with intention. For many people, that’s exactly what their body needs. They can still be incredibly challenging, but without always pushing the nervous system into a high-stress state.

We need to stay open minded to different bodies, different goals, and different seasons of life.

So let’s stop choosing sides, and start choosing the right mix of movement for your body.

That’s why we’ll always champion both.

Mat Pilates has become such a staple on our timetable, and for good reason.

If you’ve been to one of our classes, you’ll know this isn’t about rushing through reps. We move slowly, intentionally, and with purpose, creating a strong mind-muscle connection that helps you get so much more out of every movement.

Our classes are dynamic and challenging, but always low impact. In this class, all moves are on the floor, making it an incredibly grounding way to move. You’ll work your deep core, glutes, legs, arms and postural muscles in a balanced, full-body workout, all while staying connected to your breath.

One thing we value is making sure that each movement has varying levels and layers, so all of our students feel supported on their fitness journey. Whether you’re completely new to Pilates or you’ve been practising for years, we’ll help you find the variation that challenges you in just the right way.

Mat Pilates is a class we often recommend when you’re wanting to move your body and work hard, but you’re not quite feeling up to the higher energy demands of a barre class.

What’s your favourite class on our timetable?

Tomorrow we’re taking a pause for Matariki, with the studio closed as we spend time resting, reflecting and connecting with our whānau.

This evening we had the privilege of sharing a Matariki Roll & Release class together. Thank you to everyone who joined us and created such a calm, supportive space to move, breathe and reflect.

Matariki reminds us that rest has value too. It’s a chance to acknowledge where we’ve been, what’s shaped us, and consider what we’d like to carry into the year ahead.

Tonight in class we reflected on the idea this, but rather than thinking about what we might like to achieve in a traditional sense, we pondered how might we want to feel? What do we want to create more space for? Or what are we ready to welcome into our lives?

Tonight’s class gave us the opportunity to slow down, sit with ourselves, and create space for reflection. In the busyness of everyday life, these moments can be hard to come by, but they are often where we reconnect with what truly matters.

We’ll be back in the studio on Saturday.

Mānawatia a Matariki.
