Badminton Otago

This weekend the annual South Island Inter-Association Veterans teams tournament was held in Chch. Otago had 4 teams competing. Otago 1 came 2nd in Division 1, Otago 2 won Division 2, Otago 3 won Division 3 and Otago 4 placed 4th in Division 4. Well done everyone! A lovely weekend to play baddy and connect with players from around the country.

Coming up in early September we have the Otago U13 and Otago U17 tournaments, Sept 5, and Sept 6 if entry numbers require it. Both held at the Otago Badminton Centre, St Kilda. We are running a 5 week Box Doubles comp starting on Thursday 30 July 7pm. This is suitable for any players A, B, C grade including anyone that has come to the Wed or Thurs games nights previously. The Otago Open has wrapped up for 2026, congrats to all the winners and well played to everyone that took part. Thanks to Suzanne tournament-controller-extraordinaire for running a tight ship and to all the players and officials who umpired and volunteered their time, thanks to the Brindson's for running the lunchtime cafe. We are running an adults beginners course, aimed at adults new to or returning to badminton. The course is taken by a Badminton Otago coach. Across the 4 weeks the fundamental shots will be taught along with rules/scoring etc, with the emphasis on fun and playing games. Cost - $20 upfront, covering 4 x 1hr sessions from August 3 to 24 inclusive, 6-7pm, Otago Badminton Centre, St Kilda. This weekend we have the Otago Open happening at the Otago Badminton Centre in St Kilda. Come down to watch some great games, all welcome. First round umpires are also on the main page in tournament software :) We have a lunch canteen running sat and sun 11.30am-1.30pm, some great burger, chips, soup options plus we will have fruit + snack and drinks available to purchase throughout the tournament.

Congratulations to the following players who have been selected to represent Otago in the Otago 2 and 3 senior rep teams. These teams will travel to the Badminton NZ Division 3 South Island teams event in Christchurch in early August, along with coaches/managers Justin Ho, Jim Hoffman and Lana Perry.
