Interesting stallion that shaped sport horse breeding

Baron von Nagel and Ramzes: The Partnership That Helped Shape the Modern Sport Horse

In the story of European sport horse breeding, some names appear again and again—not because they followed fashion, but because they changed it. Baron Clemens von Nagel-Doornick and the grey Anglo-Arab stallion Ramzes belong firmly in that category.

Ramzes was foaled in Poland in 1937. Bred from Thoroughbred and Shagya-Arab blood, he was not the obvious choice for breeders used to heavier warmblood types. Yet his refinement, courage, jumping ability and athletic intelligence made him exactly the kind of horse post-war breeding needed.

Baron von Nagel recognised what others initially missed. At Vornholz Stud in Westphalia, he saw in Ramzes not merely a useful stallion, but a source of modern performance blood. Ramzes competed successfully under Hans-Heinrich “Micky” Brinkmann before injury turned his career fully toward breeding.

At first, not everyone was convinced. Some of his early foals were considered too light, too refined, and too unlike the traditional warmblood ideal. But sport soon gave the final verdict. Ramzes’ descendants began to prove themselves in show jumping, producing horses with scope, quick reflexes, courage and rideability.

Among the names linked to his legacy are Retina, Romanus, Ramona and, through later generations, some of the most influential Holsteiner and German sport horse lines. His blood became woven into the pedigrees of countless jumpers, eventers and dressage horses.

The genius of Baron von Nagel was not simply owning Ramzes. It was believing in him early, when the stallion’s value was not yet obvious. He understood that the future sport horse needed blood, sharpness, elasticity and mental strength—not just size and substance.

Today, Ramzes is remembered as one of the great foundation sires of modern European sport horse breeding. Baron von Nagel’s judgement helped preserve and promote that influence. Together, they remind us that breeding progress often begins with one person seeing possibility where others see risk.

Their story is not just about a stallion and his owner. It is about vision, patience, and the courage to breed for the horse the future will need.
