I felt fine during my rehab... but that night I was really sore.”
Or...
“I woke up the next morning and felt like I’d gone backwards.”
If that’s ever happened to you, your first thought is probably:
➡️ “I’ve overdone it.”
➡️ “I’ve damaged something.”
➡️ “My rehab is making me worse.”
But before you jump to that conclusion, ask yourself something...
Has your body ever responded exactly the same way every single day?
Probably not.
Your body doesn’t have a fixed capacity. It has a fluctuating capacity.
That means you can do the exact same exercises you’ve been doing for weeks, feel completely fine during the session, and then be more sore that evening or the following morning.
Why?
Because your body is responding to much more than just the exercises.
Ask yourself:
💤 How did I sleep?
🍽️ Have I eaten enough today?
🥩 Am I getting enough protein to recover?
💧 Am I dehydrated?
😮💨 Has stress been higher than I realised?
🤒 Am I fighting off a virus?
🏋️ Am I still adapting to my recent rehab sessions?
📈 Has my body simply had a lower-capacity day?
Any of these can change how your body responds hours after you’ve exercised, or even the next morning.
That doesn’t automatically mean you’ve damaged yourself.
It also doesn’t mean we ignore every flare-up.
If every session causes significant pain that lasts for days, you’re becoming less capable over time, or your symptoms are consistently worsening, that’s valuable information. It may mean your programme, your exercise dose or your progression needs adjusting.
But one sore evening or one painful morning isn’t enough evidence to conclude you’ve gone backwards.
Instead of asking:
❌ “What have I damaged?”
Start asking:
✅ “What pattern is my pain following?”
Recovery isn’t measured by whether you wake up sore tomorrow.
It’s measured by the overall trend over weeks and months.
✔️ More good days.
✔️ Smaller flare-ups.
✔️ Faster recoveries.
✔️ More confidence.
✔️ Doing more than you could a few weeks ago.
That’s what real progress looks like.
