Tuakana coaches working hard 🫑

21/07/2026

Our third training block of the year for Rangatahi Tārewa Tū kicks off tomorrow. 🫑

One of the things that makes this programme different is that it's rangatahi-led. πŸ’― πŸ‘ŠπŸΎ

Our tuakana coaches take the lead, supporting and coaching our teina throughout the programme. It gives our older rangatahi the opportunity to put their learning into practice, grow their confidence, and develop their leadership in a real environment not by sitting in a classroom, but by doing. πŸ‹πŸ½

For our teina, it means learning from people who have been in their shoes. They see what's possible because their coaches have walked the same path.

That's the kind of environment we want to create. One where rangatahi learn from rangatahi, leadership is shared, and everyone has a chance to grow.

What a great weekend it was, now on to the next...

We are descendants of carriers, builders, warriors and nurturers. Lifting heavy things is in our DNA. The barbell is simply our modern-day waka.

Weightlifting New Zealand South Island Championships 2026 session #6. Raina Tekii M110+.

The final HCC Barbell Club athlete to compete for our crew. Not an ideal prep for Raina! Mahi, carrying a couple of injuries, meant he missed a few crucial training session. How ever Raina is one of the most consistent performers when it comes to competing. Checking in on his hauora the week before came down to adjusting the plan based on his body.

This is Raina 4th South Island Championship event and he went on to PR his competition Sn**ch at 101kgs just missing a 132kg Clean and Jerk which would have been a competition PR, this is what the goal was to improve his competition total. Ka rawe Raina.

If you interested in joining our crew we have open whanaungatanga sessions on Friday nights at 5pm. Flick us a DM for more info.

Weightlifting New Zealand South Island Championships 2026 next up session #5 W86 Brandy Henare, Ngāwai Johnston and Tina MacMillan. W86+ Sana Tekii.

The hardest workers in the room 🫰🏽 A coaches dream team πŸ’― Knowing how close the numbers were going to be out there on the platform was the only nightmare for the 3 wāhine toa in the W86 weight class πŸ˜†

Coaching 4 on the go in the biggest session of the weekend πŸ˜…

This was the first championship event for Brandy and Ngāwai who both achieved PR's and walked away with a 2nd and 3rd placing. Tina being more experienced has had a long break but came back more determined than even focusing on her hauora.

Sana has plenty of experience on the platform, we were 3kgs shy of hitting B grade which was our goal but she still PR'd her competition sn**ch at 81kg and clean & jerk 101kg. A low hanging fruit weekend for the win.

Now on to the next.....
