Winter Ringers Final Round

A BIG thank you to Kevin King for running the Ringers for us.

With the completion of the final Round 13, we saw the completion of the Winter Ringers Competition played under ideal conditions, being fine, warm and with little wind to speak of. The greens were soft after a couple of days of rainfall but rolling fair and true. There was a change at the top of leaderboard with Joseph Reeves (40.270) coming thundering home with a wet sail to decisively lead with a weekly improvement of 3.952 on 43.730, with Ross Wills (27.775) dropping into second on 46.225, ahead of Peter Marsh (33.325) in third place on 46.675, a margin of 0.450 from second. With Jonathan Kemp (17.110) holding onto fourth position Having not played this round, on 49.890 and with Greg Carr (32.575) improving six places into fifth on 50.425. Some of the biggest movers amongst the other players after the round were Trevor Lee (20.217) up 6 places to eleventh on 51.783, Kevin King (19.150) up 3 places to fourteenth on 52.850 and Keith Yardley (24.510) moves up 5 places to twenty-second, on 55.490.

There were only another 6 birdies or better recorded last week bringing the final field total to 211, with the highlights being the excellent sub 80 round carded by Spencer Wicks (3.6) with a 77 off the Black tees which included 4 birdies. Next best was John Deacon (10.1) and Tim Donaldson ( 8.7) with 81's off the Blue Tees.
There were no further eagles carded by the field after the final round, with the final total standing at 8.

In the birdies or better statistics, we now have Graham Free (8.0) leading with a tally of 13 birdies, followed closely by Angus Tucker (6.0) with 3 eagles and 7 birdies, then followed by Ram Thapa (10.3) with 11 birdies, then Richard Maguire (10.0) and Spencer Wicks (3.6) with 10 birdies each.

There are 43 (95.56%) players who have registered a bogey or better on every hole.
The hardest ranked hole determined by the numbers of birdies or better carded after Round 13, is Hole # 11 with only two birdies recorded, followed by Holes # 9 and # 18 with 5 birdies each. The easiest hole has been Hole # 1 with 27 birdies or better by different players. The next easiest are Hole # 17 with 19 birdies each by different players. This is followed by Hole # 14 with 16 birdies.

The "King of the Ringers" Trophy which combines the Gross and Net results of the Summer and Winter Ringers competition was once again a close fought affair. Overall there were 61 competitors but only those that entered both competitions were eligible, that being 33 competitors.

The "King of the Ringers" Trophy final standings are:

Urlwin Rosebowl - pairs matchplay

The final took place on Saturday between Angus Tucker / Leighton Sparks, vs Ram Thapa / Sy Keelan.
What a tough match this was with neither team able to win a single hole in the first 8 holes.
Ram and Sy finally broke the deadlock, winning the 9th hole, taking a 1up lead into the back 9,
Ram and Angus were both playing well today, so they were the anchors for their teams,
Ram won the 11th hole to go 2up, but then Angus hit back with a spectacular eagle to win the 12th, he won the 13th as well to bring the team back to all square,
Ram made two great birdies on 14 and 15 to get back to 2up, Leighton finally decided to help out his partner, winning the 16th and 17th holes,
With the match all square coming down the 18th, Ram and Angus both made par, but with Ram getting a shot on the hole, the victory went to Ram and Sy.

I made lots of jokes about Sy being useless today, and the trophy should only go to Ram, but I know Sy played superb golf in their earlier matches, so about time Ram helped out today!!
Well done guys, a great team win.

Presidents

The team got off to a satisfying start to the new season. We hosted Bottle Lake and came away with a 5.5 to 2.5 win.
The conditions were very difficult with 40kph winds making play very tricky. After the rain from the night before and now the high winds the course changed dramatically througout the day. We have to thank the greens staff for their great work over recent weeks for the resiliance of the fairways and greens.

Winners for us on the day were: Malcolm Wratt, Robert Tibbotts, Lyoyd Bell, Steve Satherley and Harry Lim with David Cross managing a half.

Next challenge for the team is an away match at Christchurch on September 13th.
