Sometimes I think we spend too much time asking which martial art would win a fight, and not enough time asking what martial arts are supposed to teach us.
When I trained in Taekwondo, part of our training was learning discipline and responsibility alongside the techniques. We were taught that martial arts weren’t something to use outside the dojang simply to show off, intimidate people or prove how tough we were.
Yet online, so much martial arts discussion seems obsessed with “Would this work in a real fight?” “My style beats your style.” “That would never work on me.”
Don't get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with pressure-testing what we train and discussing effectiveness. But if learning how to fight only makes us more eager to fight, have we really learned the art?
I think that is what Ip Man meant by this quote. Use martial arts to build yourself up in confidence, strength, health and capability. That is the best thing we can do for humanity - becoming strong in mind body and spirit.
What do you think? Has modern martial arts culture become too focused on proving which style or fighter is superior?
