Neil McPhail, great uncle to Andrew McPhail (current 4th generation owner of McPhail Sports) was a WW2 prisoner of war. He fought in Africa and was captured by the Germans, then managed to escape.

Neil was an All Blacks coach and selector from 1961-1965, and holds the fifth best coach for winning achievements (ranked by sportswriter Phil Gifford for The New Zealand Herald)

He was friends with Charles Upham. For work he dedicated the rest of his life to McPhail & Fisher as a leather merchant, like his father before him.
