Pacific Leaders Unite Behind Historic Rugby League Partnership Before State of Origin III

BRISBANE, Australia — Pacific leaders gathered in Brisbane on Wednesday to witness the signing of a landmark Pacific Rugby League Partnership before joining more than 50,000 fans at Suncorp Stadium for the deciding match of the 2026 State of Origin series, where the New South Wales Blues claimed the shield with a convincing victory over the Queensland Maroons.

The historic agreement, signed ahead of the Origin decider, brings together the Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC), the Australian Government and the rugby league federations and governments of Samoa, Papua New Guinea, Tonga and Fiji in what is being hailed as a transformational investment in the future of rugby league across the Pacific.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese joined Samoa Prime Minister Laʻaulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao Fosi Schmidt, Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape and Tongan Prime Minister Lord Fakafanua to witness the signing ceremony, underscoring rugby league’s growing role in strengthening regional ties across the Pacific.

The partnership is backed by an A$250 million investment from the Australian Government as part of a broader A$600 million commitment to rugby league in the Pacific, which also includes support for Papua New Guinea’s entry into the NRL competition in 2028.

For Samoa, the agreement promises significant investment in grassroots rugby league through school competitions, accredited coaching programmes, girls’ participation initiatives, stronger domestic competitions and expanded pathways for young players to progress to elite levels.

The partnership is built around three key pillars — community and grassroots development, pathways and academies, and elite and international rugby league — with the aim of increasing participation while using the sport to promote healthier, stronger and more connected communities.

Prime Minister Laʻauli said the investment reflected the importance of rugby league throughout the Pacific, noting that around half of all current NRL players are of Pasifika heritage.

“Investing in sport is also investing in stronger communities, and more prosperity for our future and our region,” he said.

“Rugby league is more than a game. It is a source of national pride, the way we bring communities together and a powerful platform to develop our young people and prepare them for new opportunities.”

Prime Minister Albanese described rugby league as a powerful force that unites Australia and the Pacific through shared values and generations of cultural connections.

Following the signing ceremony, the Pacific leaders attended the 2026 State of Origin III decider at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium, where the New South Wales Blues sealed the series with a dominant performance over Queensland, bringing the landmark day for Pacific rugby league to a fitting conclusion on one of the sport’s biggest stages.

The partnership is expected to accelerate the development of rugby league throughout the region while further strengthening the Pacific’s influence on the international game.
